San Bonifacio brings together geological evidence, architectural history and a circular route along the Torrente Alpone. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay focused on culture and landscape, the town offers several distinct themes: the fossil collection at the Museo Civico Geopaleontologico “Abate Don Giuseppe Dalla Tomba,” Villa Gritti, the Parco della Rimembranza and the route along the Alpone. You can plan your visit around whether you want to focus on the history of the Earth, the historical use of buildings or a waterside route.

Fossils at the Museo Civico Geopaleontologico

The Museo Civico Geopaleontologico “Abate Don Giuseppe Dalla Tomba” is located within the Abbazia di San Pietro-Villanova complex. Its collection is displayed in 21 cases across two rooms. The fossils come from many different areas, represent every geological era and illustrate the major changes in life forms on Earth since the Archeozoic. The focus, therefore, is neither on a single era nor on just one area of origin: the collection spans the history of the Earth and explores the changing forms of life. In contrast to the history of Villa Gritti, the focus here is on geological time periods and the development of life forms.

Villa Gritti: Building History and Agriculture

The Gritti family enlarged Villa Gritti to its current size. The outbuilding La Pila and its portico are also part of the estate’s history: both were used in part for hulling rice. This brings together two aspects that can be considered separately: the architectural expansion of the villa and the agricultural use of parts of the outbuilding and portico. Rice hulling adds a specific form of rice processing to the building’s history and gives the villa a different historical focus from the fossil collection.

The Parco della Rimembranza

The Parco della Rimembranza is located on a volcanic hill, the only rise above the surrounding plain, which stretches across many hectares. The park is laid out in a ring and enclosed by a belt of buildings. Two scales meet here: the single rise in the broad plain and the clearly defined shape of the park within its built enclosure. The site is defined by both its volcanic terrain and the park’s ring-shaped layout.

A circular route along the Torrente Alpone

The circular route “Lungo il torrente Alpone tra campagna e storia” starts at the Abbazia di Villanova and follows the banks of the Torrente Alpone. It runs along a combined cycle and pedestrian path. Unlike the fossil collection or the villa, the focus here is on the waterside route. If you would like to include a walk in your travel plans, you can treat it as a separate focus alongside the town’s cultural attractions. The starting point at the Abbazia di Villanova and the route along the Torrente Alpone give the walk its specific character.

Getting to San Bonifacio

San Bonifacio can be reached via the Milan–Venice railway line, which serves San Bonifacio station. By car, you can travel via the A4 Autostrada Serenissima, the Soave–San Bonifacio exit or Strada Regionale No. 11. There is therefore a rail connection as well as specific road options. Before travelling by train, check the current timetable; if you are driving, you can plan your route via the motorway exit or the regional road. This lets you arrange your journey regardless of whether your stay will focus mainly on the history of the Earth, historic buildings or the route along the Alpone.
