Ganfardine offers two distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: designated natural areas and the history of the airfield. If you are looking for a hotel, the purpose of your trip may influence your choice of location: nature and conservation focus on different aspects than historic aviation use.

Natural Area and Conservation

Within the municipality of Sommacampagna, Ex Cava Ceriani (Ganfardine) is designated as one of three areas with a high degree of naturalness. The area is subject to absolute protection from external sources of pollution and anthropogenic contamination. The aim is to preserve its existing naturalness and strengthen ecosystem function. The focus on nature is clearly defined: the priority is to protect the existing state and strengthen ecological function.

Another natural feature is the Rio Ganfardine. It is designated as a secondary ecological corridor and makes a significant contribution to diversifying natural habitats. The two designations have different emphases: Ex Cava Ceriani is concerned with conservation and ecosystem function, while the Rio Ganfardine is concerned with the diversity of natural habitats. If you choose Ganfardine for its nature-related themes, you can consider these perspectives separately.

Aviation History in Chronological Order

The Ganfardine airfield became operational between May and June 1918 during the Battle of the Solstice. On May 3, the 134th Squadriglia arrived with Pomilio PE aircraft; on May 12, the 1st Sezione S.V.A. followed under the command of Capitano Palli. Two days later, on May 14, the 75th Squadriglia da Caccia arrived. There are eleven days between the first and third of these arrival dates. This sequence makes the spring of 1918 a clearly datable period in the area's history and distinguishes the individual arrivals from one another.

From July, the airfield housed the command of the 3° Gruppo Aeroplani. On August 1, 1918, a meeting between Bishop Bartolomeo Bacilieri and King Vittorio Emanuele III took place in Ganfardine. This meeting adds another Ganfardine event to the year's timeline.

After the end of hostilities, a private flying school operated at the airfield from at least 1923 to 1940. This later use is distinct in time from the events of 1918. Taken together, the sequence runs from the airfield's opening in spring, through arrivals and a command post that same year, to the later private flying school.

Themes to Guide Your Travel Decision

Consider whether you are more interested in conservation and natural habitats or in the chronological development of aviation history. This lets you base your choice of location on specific nature and history themes, and then look for a hotel for your stay.
