Cavalo: Local History and the Hiking Trail to Monte Pastello
Accommodation in Cavalo
When choosing a stay in Cavalo, two distinct aspects of the area stand out: historical traces of Cavalo and the hiking route to Monte Pastello. At the Chiesa Vecchia, architectural history meets a Roman votive stone; the Lavatoi represent communal water use and washing. The hiking trail can be understood in terms of its starting point, its route via Contrada Piazzi and its summit destination. These topics give you concrete points of reference to decide whether you would like to discover Cavalo through its local history, a hike, or both.
The Chiesa Vecchia and its history
The Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo is a 15th-century building erected over an older Romanesque church. Traces of the Romanesque predecessor church have been preserved. This means that two historical periods are represented side by side in one building: the construction of the church in the 15th century and the remains of the older church. The Chiesa Vecchia also houses a Roman altar dedicated to the goddess Lualda, a deity of the ancient Arusnates. Here, a medieval church building and an ancient religious reference come together, representing different periods. The Chiesa Vecchia is located outside the built-up area, on the road towards Monte di Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella.
The Lavatoi as evidence of everyday life
The Lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane are an impressive fountain, almost ten metres long, with a public washing facility. They served as a collection point for drinking water and as a public washing facility, bringing water supply and communal washing together in one place. The Lavatoi have also always been an important landmark in the area. Unlike at the Chiesa Vecchia, the focus here is not on church architecture and an ancient dedication, but on communal everyday functions. Their significance can therefore be understood from two perspectives: as a place for water supply and laundry in the past, and as a lasting landmark.
Hiking trail to Monte Pastello
The Da Cavalo al Monte Pastello hiking trail starts at the parish church of Cavalo. It heads uphill westward through the historic centre to Contrada Piazzi, where it reaches a viewpoint. On the way to the summit, it follows CAI Trail 238. The summit of Monte Pastello is at an altitude of 1,112 metres; a two-metre-high stone cross stands there. The trail climbs approximately 570 metres. This figure refers to the elevation gain of the route, while 1,112 metres is the summit’s elevation—two values that distinguish the climb from the destination’s altitude. Contrada Piazzi is the name of a viewpoint along the route, while Monte Pastello is the summit destination. For assessing the physical demands, it is relevant that this is considered the most challenging trail in the series and is suitable for people with good physical fitness. This allows you to consider the route, elevation figures and stated level of difficulty separately when making your choice.
