Portogruaro: Historic Centre, Archaeology and Art
Accommodation in Portogruaro
Portogruaro offers culture lovers several distinct points of interest: a historic centre with a Venetian character, archaeological collections and different forms of art interpretation. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the townscape, museum objects or art.
Historic Centre and Historical Records
The historic centre of Portogruaro features stone bridges, medieval town gates and churches, as well as calli and campielli with a Venetian character. For travellers interested in historic architecture, this offers a focus on various elements of the townscape. The combination of these architectural features with the calli and campielli gives the centre its Venetian character.
The Molini di Sant’Andrea are mentioned in a papal bull dating from 1186. This date adds a specific historical reference to the architectural focus: the townscape and the written record offer different ways of exploring Portogruaro’s history.
Archaeological Collections and a Tower Museum
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale Concordiese was the first museum to be founded in Veneto. It displays architectural elements, funerary steles, portraits and epigraphic material—that is, inscriptions—as well as three mosaic floors. One of the floors features a depiction of the Three Graces. Visitors who choose museum exhibits by specific object groups will find written and architectural evidence, as well as portraits and mosaics.
The Museo della Città is housed in the building of the ancient Torre di Sant’Agnese, which dates from the 13th century. It is one of three surviving medieval towers in Portogruaro. Here, the museum occupies a preserved medieval building, offering a different architectural focus from the collection objects at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Concordiese.
Art and Different Ways of Presenting It
The Galleria Ai Molini has once again hosted exhibitions of contemporary art since 1993. Casa Russolo exhibits oil paintings, etching plates and prints by Luigi Russolo. A video projection and two monitors present the artistic development of Futurism and Luigi Russolo in four languages. The two art offerings thus differ in both subject and presentation: contemporary exhibitions are set alongside Russolo’s works and a multilingual presentation. The years refer to different historical milestones: 1186 is the date of the record for the Molini di Sant’Andrea, while 1993 marks the resumption of exhibitions at the Galleria Ai Molini.
