When planning a trip to Fossalta Di Piave, you can first decide whether to focus on the Piave river area or its historic places of remembrance. Both themes offer specific points of interest: the Parco Fluviale and the trails in the floodplain, as well as villas, commemorative plaques, and the Hemingway stele. The sites also differ in how they can be visited: the river park is set up for leisure and recreation and is open to everyone; Villa Tolotti-Silvestri can only be viewed from the outside.

Along the Piave: River Park and Trails

The Parco Fluviale covers an area of about 30,000 square metres in the Piave floodplain. Its landscape includes wooded areas, clearings, meadows, and shrubland. For a themed look at the plants, there is an interactive tour of the most common and representative plants along the trail in the Parco Fluviale di Fossalta di Piave. The park therefore offers visitors a chance to explore both its different landscape features and the plants along the trail.

The trails also differ in how they can be used. The section of the Ippovia del Piave in the Fossalta di Piave floodplain can be used as a walking, riding, and cycling route along the banks of the Piave. The Ciclabile del Piave also begins in Fossalta di Piave, specifically in the Piave floodplain developed as a river park. The Ponte di barche is located near its starting point and is considered a particularly scenic spot. If you are planning around cycling, the starting point of the Ciclabile is a specific reference point; the Ippovia also lists walking and riding as ways to use the route. The Ponte di barche adds a viewpoint near the start to this orientation.

History and Remembrance

Il Battistero is a peace monument inspired by the Ragazzi del 99. The Giornata della Pace is held each year to mark the anniversary of its inauguration; its highlight is the baptism of Italian and foreign children. If you would like to travel to Fossalta di Piave specifically for this celebration, check the event date in advance. The Hemingway stele commemorates the night of July 8, 1918, when Ernest Hemingway was seriously wounded in the knee in Fossalta di Piave and suffered numerous shrapnel injuries. While the Battistero is associated with peace and an annual celebration, the stele marks a specific episode of the First World War.

Villa Belloni, now known as Villa Canthus, has two commemorative plaques. They recall the resistance of the Avellino and Ferrara Brigades from June 15 to 17, 1918. The Fossetta Canal offers a different point of reference in time: it was built in 1495 by hydraulic engineer Marco Corsaro. The plaques commemorate an event from 1918, while the canal recalls a much earlier hydraulic engineering project.

Villas and How to Visit Them

Villa Tolotti-Silvestri dates from the late 18th century and escaped destruction during the First World War. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. So plan to see it from the exterior, not as an indoor visit. Its construction date, preservation during the war, and restriction to exterior viewing offer different ways to understand the villa. This makes it clearly different from the river park, which is expressly intended for leisure and recreation.

Choosing Hotels in Fossalta Di Piave

Bear in mind that Villa Tolotti-Silvestri can only be viewed from the outside; for the annual peace celebration, the relevant date is the anniversary of the inauguration. This lets you identify the purpose of your trip before comparing hotel offers.
