Collalto: Castle Traces, Church Art and Guided Walks
Accommodation in Collalto
Collalto brings together several distinct points of interest for a trip: traces of the fortifications at Castello di Collalto, the art and religious mementos of Chiesa di San Giorgio, and guided walks through the medieval village and along the walls of the ruined castle. You can weigh these highlights against one another when choosing your destination. Those especially interested in architectural history will find a tiered fortification at Castello; the church offers a different focus, with relics and works of art. The guided walks combine a legend with the village and castle walls. This makes it possible to get a sense of Collalto through specific themes, rather than using just one activity as the benchmark.
The fortified levels of Castello
Castello di Collalto developed across three fortified levels, which were surrounded by walls; traces of them are still clearly visible today. The Torre magna of Castello has been maintained and restored by the Collalto family in recent years. Looking at the complex, you can distinguish two periods: the visible traces of the fortifications and the more recent work on the named tower. The three levels give the complex its layout, while the Torre magna serves as a separate point of reference for the more recent preservation work.
Chiesa di San Giorgio: Architectural History and Art
The present-day Chiesa di San Giorgio was built in 1927 to a design by architect Domenico Rupolo. The church houses the relic of the “Sacre Spine” as well as relics of Blessed Giuliana di Collalto. Its furnishings include two 17th-century wooden statues and an altarpiece created by Guido Pini. It depicts Saint George slaying the dragon. Thus, religious tradition and visual art come together in the church: the relics are sacred mementos, while the material and period of the statues, as well as the artist and subject of the altarpiece, offer points of interest in their own right. The construction date of the present-day church and the objects kept there offer different perspectives on this place.
Guided Walks and Landscape
The Visite guidate a Collalto program includes a walk focused on the legend of Bianca di Collalto, through the medieval village and along the walls of the ruined castle. A forest path, ruined walls and a tower overlooking the plain also give the guided walk a connection to the landscape. The story of Bianca, the medieval village and the view across the plain thus come together in one program. If you plan to join a guided walk, check the schedule before your trip.
Festivities and Practical Information
The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio in Collalto begin with a Mass in honour of Saint George on 23 April. The festivities also include cultural evenings and food events featuring spit-roasted meat (spiedo). Their religious occasion, cultural program and clearly defined culinary focus give the Festeggiamenti a different character from exploring the castle and church. Check the dates and program before your trip if you would like to attend these events. The Mostra mercato di Collalto was renewed in 2003.
Piazzetta Giovanni Paolo II in Collalto is designated as an information point and car park. If you plan to use the piazzetta for directions or parking, check the local notices before your visit, as local regulations may change.
