Cavaso del Tomba: Culture and Trails on Monte Tomba
Accommodation in Cavaso Del Tomba
Cavaso del Tomba lies on the southern slope of the spur that extends from Monte Grappa towards the Piave. There are different points of interest to consider when choosing a destination: the memorial on Monte Tomba, the history of Castelcies, churches and villas, as well as walks and hiking trails. This allows you to balance cultural attractions and outdoor activities according to your own interests.
Landscape on Monte Tomba
From the 868-metre-high Monte Tomba, the 360-degree panorama takes in the peaks of the Feltrino area, the Veneto plain, the hills around Asolo and the Piave. The area around the mountain can be explored on walks in natural surroundings. Habitats also shape the landscape: the municipality’s central area almost entirely coincides with the SIC and ZPS areas of Massiccio del Grappa. These are home to natural and semi-natural terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Views, walks and natural areas are therefore different ways to plan your stay in Cavaso del Tomba.
Memorial site and the history of Castelcies
The Chiesa Alpina sul Monte Tomba was consecrated in memory of the Italian and French soldiers who fell on Monte Tomba in 1917–18. One distinctive feature is the movable wall in the lower part of the façade, which connects the sacred space with the landscape. Its commemorative purpose and architecture stand side by side, making the site accessible both through its history and its design.
The Castelcies complex includes the recently restored medieval chapel of San Martino. The remains of the castle were uncovered in more recent archaeological excavations and subsequently consolidated by the Soprintendenza per i Beni Ambientali e Architettonici del Veneto Orientale. On the rounded hilltop, the remains are visible a few dozen metres west of the church. A visit to Castelcies brings a chapel and the structural remains of the castle together; the visible remains give this historic site a tangible connection to the landscape.
Other cultural landmarks include the Pieve della Visitazione della Beata Vergine Maria, which houses remarkable paintings, and San Giorgio on Colle della Bastia, dating from the 15th century. Villa Bianchi dates from the 18th century and is designed in the Palladian style. During the annual “Arte e Natura” event, Castelcies, Bocca di Serra and Costalunga become an open-air museum; details may vary from one edition to another.
Hiking trails and different route options
Hiking trail 211 on Monte Grappa leads from Cavaso del Tomba to Castel Cesil. CAI hiking trail 212, which starts at the church in Caniezza in Cavaso del Tomba, joins the Monte Tomba–Cima della Mandria route. The nearby trenches of Castel Cesil can also be reached on foot from Cavaso del Tomba via CAI 212. For route planning, it is helpful to note the difference between the descriptions: trail 211 has a stated start and destination, while CAI 212 is described in terms of a connection to another route and the walk to the trenches. No information on the walking time or difficulty of these trails is provided here.
If you mainly want to explore the area around Monte Tomba, you can follow the suggested walks in natural surroundings. If you are looking for a specific route, the details about Castel Cesil and the CAI 212 connection provide more precise destinations and route information. These different descriptions help you choose an outing based on your preferred focus, without treating the routes as equivalent.
Villa Premoli and visits by appointment
Villa Premoli dates from the 17th century. The wall surrounding the Le Cioere orchard by the villa can be visited via a route that is open to the public free of charge. Regular opening hours are on the first Monday of each month, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; visits are also available by appointment. If you plan a visit, it is best to check the stated time slot in advance.
Villa Premoli offers cellar tastings of organically produced Prosecco for up to 40 people, by advance reservation. Visitors can also reserve local dishes paired with organic Asolo Prosecco DOCG Brut in advance. This offer is also available to guests who are not staying at the villa. The arrangements therefore vary depending on the experience: the cellar tasting requires a reservation and is subject to the stated capacity, while meals can also be reserved by visitors who are not staying there.
