Cartura – Venetian Architecture and Rural Heritage
Accommodation in Cartura
Cartura brings together evidence of Venetian architecture, rural architecture and a cycling route that runs through the town. Its highlights range from a church with art-historical significance and villas spanning several centuries to a preserved farmhouse dwelling. The Vigenzone and Cagnola canals also form an ecological corridor. For your trip planning, you can arrange these attractions according to your interests: art and architectural history are just as much a focus as rural heritage and the Ciclovia del Sale e dello Zucchero as another route to explore.
Church and Art History
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was first mentioned in 1130, under the name Santa Maria della Valle. Another historical feature is the ceiling fresco of the Assumption of Mary, painted by Giandomenico Tiepolo in 1793 and housed in the church. The earlier name and the fresco mark different periods: the former refers to the church’s early mention, while the latter is a specific work from the late 18th century.
Another chapter in Cartura’s architectural history began with a decision: in 1696, the parish priest at the time, Don Girolamo Dottor De-Grandis, decided to build a new church; its large nave was built in 1700. The dates mark two different steps: first the decision, then the construction of the nave four years later.
Villas Spanning Several Centuries
Villa Buzzaccarini is considered a rare example of Venetian architecture. Its western section dates from the 16th century, while the long eastern wing dates from the 18th century. A substantial tower connects the two sections; it was fitted with battlements in the last century. This makes two distinct building phases visible within the same villa. In Cagnola, Villa Santinello offers a further point of comparison: it is a three-storey building from the late 17th century.
Rural Heritage, Canals and Cycling Route
A casone—a typical rural dwelling of the farmers of the Venetian plain—is preserved in Gorgo di Cartura. It represents a different aspect of the architectural heritage from the villas: a type of dwelling associated with farming life on the Venetian plain. The embanked Vigenzone and Cagnola canals form an ecological corridor. The Ciclovia del Sale e dello Zucchero also passes through Cartura. These two features offer different starting points for planning your trip: the cycling route provides a specific route through the town, while the canals stand out for their ecological function.
