Morrano Nuovo offers several clearly distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the La Casella settlement site, Castel Peccio Castle to the south, and various trails through the landscape. Some routes lead to Morrano Nuovo, while others relate to Morrano. History, nature, and regional road connections thus provide different ways to plan your stay.

Historic Traces in Morrano Nuovo and Morrano

The La Casella settlement site is located in Morrano Nuovo and provides an archaeological link to the area’s history. An entry in a church directory from 2019 also locates the parish of Natività della Maria SS. in Morrano – Bagni in Morrano Nuovo. The Church of Natività di Maria Santissima in Morrano has an initial building phase dating to the 16th century. For orientation, the precise place name is therefore helpful: La Casella and the parish are associated with Morrano Nuovo, while the church is associated with Morrano.

Castel Peccio South of Morrano Nuovo

The fortified complex of Castel Peccio stands on a hilltop at an elevation of 204 meters, about 1,500 meters south of Morrano Nuovo. Below it, the Fosso Cavalmorto to the northwest and the Chiani River to the south form the boundaries of the site. Extensive parts of the buildings, as well as the walls of the fortified enclosure, survive as ruins. The enclosure is the fortified outer boundary of the complex, explaining why its walls, along with the buildings, are part of the ruins. A decree dated October 17, 1434, ordered the castle’s destruction.

Regional Roads and Trails

For regional orientation, the SP 101 di Morrano connects Morrano in the south with the SS 71 Umbro Casentinese toward Ficulle, and in the north with the SS 317 toward San Venanzo. These road connections provide a regional framework for trip planning; the trails, by contrast, relate to specific sequences of places and landscapes.

The first section of the trail through Morrano passes through woods on the slopes of Monte Peglia. Another route is the Ciconia–Pallarete–Poggente–San Bartolomeo–Villa Laura–Morrano–Ponte di Ferro–Ciconia loop. It reaches Morrano Nuovo via trails through olive groves along the provincial road. The loop route was recorded in April 2021; as conditions on rural trails can change, check them before setting out. Wooded slopes and olive groves are distinct landscape features: the woods are part of the first section of the trail through Morrano, while the olive groves are part of the section by which the loop reaches Morrano Nuovo.

The marked and signposted Anello dell’Elmo trail starts in Morrano, in the Province of Orvieto, and leads to the summit of Melonta near Monte Peglia. The Anello Orvieto–Monte Peglia–Corbara–Orvieto loop passes through the hamlet of Morrano in its first section. Morrano is therefore the starting point for one of these routes and a place along the first section of the other. The Ciconia loop, in turn, leads to Morrano Nuovo. These place references help distinguish the routes by their respective courses.

Location Details When Looking for Accommodation

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Morrano Nuovo, compare the location in your plans with the specific route you have in mind.
