Discover Torre Del Colle
Accommodation in Torre Del Colle
Torre del Colle offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the small settlement at an elevated location, a route along the Attone, insights into winemaking and wine tasting, and sacred art.
Townscape and Location
Torre del Colle is a small settlement at an elevation of between 250 and 350 metres. A semi-cylindrical tower remains along the castle's ring wall, facing the Attone Valley. The Church of San Lorenzo stands at the highest point of the small town. Its façade overlooks a charming square, which offers a panoramic view. The townscape reveals two distinct spatial relationships: the tower faces the valley, while the church and square mark the elevated position within the settlement.
Route along the Attone and Hike
A route runs from Torre del Colle along the Attone River to Cantalupo. A hike to the old village of Castelbuono can begin from there. When planning, keep these two sections of the route distinct: Cantalupo lies along the route described and is also a possible starting point for the hike to Castelbuono. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip on the riverside route or the hike that follows.
Wine and Olives
Tenuta Bellafonte offers cellar tours and wine tastings among the vineyards and olive groves of Torre del Colle. An expert explains winemaking methods before the wine is tasted. Reservations are required. The tour thus combines an explanation of the production process with a tasting afterwards.
SIDORO Azienda Agraria Biologica focuses on the history, cultivation and production of its own olive groves, as well as their connection with the area of Bevagna. The company offers visitors an informative experience. The themes differ: Tenuta Bellafonte focuses on winemaking and wine tasting, while SIDORO focuses on its own olive groves and their connection to Bevagna. You can use this distinction to choose the focus of your trip.
Church Art and Sacred Buildings
The Church of San Lorenzo contains a 16th-century painting of the Madonna in Glory with Saints Peter, Paul and Francis. The work is attributed to Ascensidonio Spacca. The new church of Torre del Colle stands at Ponte di Torre del Colle. It contains a fresco by Clemens Klopfenstein depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence. The altar in the new church is a work by sculptor Baverly Pepper and was provisionally made of iron. The two churches thus offer different works of art: an attributed painting in San Lorenzo, and a fresco and altar in the new church.
The Eremo di San Giovanni is located nearby. It was built in 1320 by Blessed Ugolino and includes a church. Alongside the artworks in San Lorenzo and the new church, you can also include a historic sacred building in the surrounding area in your thematic selection.
