San Giustino offers several ways to explore its history: a villa with panoramic views over the upper Tiber Valley, Roman finds, the story of Cospaia and trails through different regions. If you are looking for a hotel in San Giustino, it helps to decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: architecture and archaeology, the history of tobacco cultivation or a hiking route. The themes range from a single building and its collections to a trail that crosses three regions.

Villa and archaeological remains

Villa Magherini Graziani was designed in the early years of the 17th century and stands on a hill overlooking the upper Tiber Valley. The villa offers panoramic views of the Alta Valle del Tevere. It houses the Museo Pliniano, which displays finds from the Villa in Tuscis, attributed by scholars to Pliny the Younger. Thus, the early modern design date and an archaeological collection associated with Roman antiquity sit side by side. The identification of the Villa in Tuscis remains a scholarly attribution.

Excavations at Colle Plinio uncovered the remains of a Roman villa that specialists attribute to the Villa in Tuscis of Pliny the Younger. The archaeological remains include a complete Roman bath complex and a temple dedicated to the goddess Ceres. The residential remains, baths and temple show different aspects of the Roman site. Villa Cappelletti, a neoclassical building with a large garden, also stands at Colle Plinio. Its neoclassical style provides a different architectural accent from the Roman remains.

Cospaia and the history of tobacco

The Museo Storico e Scientifico del Tabacco is housed in the former tobacco growers’ consortium building near San Giustino railway station. Tobacco cultivation contributed to the prosperity of the independent state in Cospaia; the plant soon came to be called “tornabuona grass” there. Florence and the Papal States officially recognized Cospaia’s independent status in 1448. Thus, the history of tobacco cultivation and the political history of the state of Cospaia are closely connected thematically.

A medieval water mill is also among the area’s enduring traditions: the Mulino Medievale dei Renzetti still produces grain flours. They are made exclusively by slow milling on natural stone. This ongoing production and its precisely specified method offer a different focus from the historical connections to Cospaia and the Roman archaeological sites.

A historical commemoration of the independent Republic of Cospaia takes place in San Giustino on the last weekend of May. The program includes food and wine events, musical and artistic performances, conferences and other cultural activities. If the event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the exact event date before you travel.

Comparing hiking trails

The Sentiero del Contrabbandiere begins in the village of Cospaia and runs for 12.5 kilometers through Umbria, Tuscany and the Marche. At 7.6 kilometers, the Anello di Corposano is shorter; it is classified as difficulty level E on the CAI scale. The loop passes through centuries-old chestnut groves where the local “Briscia di Corposano” grows, and is associated with the Brisce di Corposano and the Cascate del Vertola. The trails therefore differ in more than just length: the Sentiero’s route through three regions shapes its character, while the Anello is distinguished by its stated difficulty level and named natural features.
