Poggiodomo offers several specific ways to plan a trip that takes in both local history and trails. The original layout of the medieval castle has been preserved in the historic center, while hiking and trekking routes lead to or from Poggiodomo. The town also has churches with different historical connections, the Eremo della Madonna della Stella, and ancient trees. For your stay, you can decide whether you are more interested in architectural history, the layout of the hermitage, or one of the trails.

History in the Townscape

The historic center of Poggiodomo preserves the original layout of its medieval castle. The town’s historic character is shaped not only by the history of individual buildings but also by the layout of the center. In the 17th century, the Borgo di San Pietro was added to the settlement of Poggiodomo; elegant noble palaces define it. This reveals two distinct points in time: the medieval origins of the layout and a later expansion in the 17th century. The noble palaces give the Borgo its own architectural character.

The Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo was built in 1635. Inside are nine wooden altars from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church’s construction date and the altars’ dates are different points of reference: the church was built in 1635, while the altars span two centuries. The Chiesa di San Salvatore in Usigni offers a different architectural perspective. Its architecture reflects the style of Roman churches of the late 16th century. The comparison thus centers on the late-16th-century stylistic influence and the church built in 1635, with its altars.

The Eremo della Madonna della Stella

The Eremo della Madonna della Stella is located in the Valle del Noce near Roccatamburo, halfway between Poggiodomo and Cerreto. The complex includes about twenty cells carved into the rock; half of the church is excavated into the rock. These architectural features give the site its distinctive character. Not all the cells are accessible, an important consideration when planning a visit. A picture of the complex therefore includes both the spaces carved into the rock and their limited accessibility.

Landscape and Ancient Trees

Poggiodomo lies on the eastern slope of Monte Coscerno. Natural highlights also include two ancient trees: the Quercia della Madonna di Poggiodomo is estimated to be over 600 years old. Just outside Poggiodomo stands a centuries-old walnut tree. The descriptions emphasize different points: for the Quercia, its estimated age; for the walnut tree, its location outside the town and its centuries-old character. If you would like to take in natural features as well as local and church history, these two trees offer distinctive points of interest.

Hiking and Trekking Routes

A hiking route leads from Cerreto di Spoleto to Poggiodomo. It passes through the Valnerina along trails characterized by greenery and peaceful quiet. A trekking route, by contrast, starts in Poggiodomo and ends in Monteleone di Spoleto. The routes therefore differ in the role Poggiodomo plays: it is the destination of the hiking route and the starting point of the trekking route. When planning a trip, you can first consider whether you want to head to Poggiodomo or start there. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
