Izzalini as a Cultural History Destination

If you are looking for a destination with a historical focus, Izzalini offers several specific architectural and cultural points of interest. Castello di Izzalini is designated as a protected cultural asset. An entrance arch has been preserved there, with a bell tower above it. Castello Piemozzo is well preserved; the Torre Baldo fortress was built in 1458. These examples each highlight different aspects: Castello di Izzalini is notable for its protected status and architectural detail, Piemozzo for its state of preservation, and Torre Baldo for its precise year of construction. This makes it possible to understand the area’s historical character through specific buildings.

The Two Churches of San Michele Arcangelo

The former parish church of San Michele Arcangelo stood within the walls of Castello di Izzalini. Its three altars were dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, the Madonna del Rosario, and San Pietro Martire. By contrast, the present-day parish church of the same name was built outside the castle walls between 1930 and 1933. It is designed in the Neo-Romanesque style and has a single-nave floor plan. Neo-Romanesque refers to a design inspired by Romanesque architectural forms; a single-nave floor plan describes a layout with one main nave. The shared name San Michele Arcangelo may initially cause confusion; their locations and construction dates distinguish the two churches. The three altar dedications refer to the former church, while the Neo-Romanesque design and single-nave floor plan describe the present-day building.

The Fortress and Older Castle Ruins

Different historical periods should be distinguished at Torre Baldo. The Torre Baldo fortress was built in 1458. Ruins in the forests of Torre Baldo attest to the existence of a 13th-century castle. According to tradition, Ilione Landone built this castle, which is why it was called Castrum Ilionis. The attribution to Ilione Landone belongs to the tradition concerning the older castle, not the fortress built in 1458. The timeline runs from the 13th-century ruins to the fortress and then to the construction of the present-day parish church between 1930 and 1933. This allows you to explore the medieval castle remains, the fortress, and the new church in their respective historical contexts.

Events and Local Cuisine

The “All'Ombra del Castello” series includes specific film and event details. The 17th edition featured four films, shown in a summer event space set up in the village square by the castle. For the 2026 edition, families from the hamlet prepared traditional dishes for tastings held before the film screenings. The order was clear: first the tasting, then the film screening. If you would like to attend a future edition, check the dates and program in advance.
