Fratta Todina: History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Fratta Todina
Fratta Todina combines historic landmarks with a scientific museum dedicated to truffles and cycling routes that differ in their described features. This gives you a choice of themes for your stay: the town’s architectural history, sacred art, truffles and truffle cultivation, or a cycling tour. Annual festivals and views over the middle Tiber Valley are also distinctive features.
Historic Buildings and Sacred Art
The origins of the Santa Maria della Spineta convent date back to the 11th century. A section of the castle walls, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, can also be seen in the historic centre. These two landmarks point to different chapters in the town’s history: the convent’s early history and the later fortifications.
The construction and expansion of Palazzo Altieri took place at different times. Bishop Angelo Cesi had the palazzo built in the second half of the 16th century. Between 1643 and 1654, Cardinal Altieri commissioned an expansion and had gardens and elaborate water features laid out. These building phases make the palazzo a tangible point of reference for the town’s historical development.
The Rosary altar in the Chiesa di San Sabino offers a distinct art-historical detail. The altarpiece by Andrea Polinori depicts the Madonna del Rosario and saints. Those interested in religious art will find here a clearly defined work and subject alongside the town’s buildings.
Truffles and Festivals Throughout the Year
The scientific museum dedicated to truffles and truffle cultivation is located in Palazzo Rivelloni in Fratta Todina. It was inaugurated in December 2023. Its subject complements the town’s architectural and artistic history with a different perspective: truffles and their cultivation. When planning your stay, you can easily distinguish this focus from the historic sights.
The festival calendar also offers two distinct occasions. The annual San Michele Arcangelo festival on 8 May revives the annual free fair established by Bishop Angelo Cesi. “Fratta Todina in Festa” is an annual village festival held at the beginning of August. The two dates therefore fall at different times of the year: one on a fixed date in May, the other at the beginning of August.
Cycling Routes with Different Features
Two circular routes with different points of reference are described for cycling visitors. The “Da Fratta Todina a Marsciano” cycling loop is about 34 km long and takes two hours to ride. Its distance and duration provide a concrete basis for fitting this excursion into your day’s plans; the distance is approximate.
The panoramic loop “Tra i lecci e le querce della valle del Tevere” ends in Fratta Todina. Its description highlights the character of the road: it has little traffic, is unpaved and unspoilt, and runs among holm oaks, oaks and—in spring—extensive stands of yellow broom. Compared with the first tour, this route is described mainly in terms of road surface and landscape, while the Marsciano tour is given a distance and riding time.
Fratta Todina also offers views over the middle Tiber Valley. Together with the vegetation described along the panoramic loop, these views provide a landscape highlight alongside the buildings and works of art. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: the town’s history and art, the truffle museum, one of the recurring festival dates, or a cycling tour with its particular features.
