Discover Fanciullata
Accommodation in Fanciullata
In Fanciullata, a religious image, a personal memorial, and a clearly marked cycling route point come together. The small Church of Madonna del Fanciullo preserves the story of an older wayside shrine; a marble plaque commemorates Lieutenant Bruno Andreoli. The Torgiano–Deruta cycling route also passes through Fanciullata at kilometer 17.6. These themes offer different cultural and practical points of reference for planning your trip.
The Church of Madonna del Fanciullo
The small church was built in the 17th century to protect an older wayside shrine. As early as 1459, the Perugian painter Bartolomeo Caporali had painted a fresco on this shrine. The sequence is noteworthy: first, the older shrine received its fresco; later, the church was built to protect it.
The recently restored niche in the church depicts the Madonna and Child between angels. The Eternal Father is believed to be depicted in the spandrel; Saint James and Saint Anthony Abbot are believed to be shown beside the niche. The arrangement can be read from the central Madonna and Child motif to the spandrel and then to the figures at the sides. The niche thus combines a central scene with other named depictions in clearly distinct positions.
Remembering Bruno Andreoli
A rectangular marble memorial plaque in Fanciullata commemorates the death of Lieutenant Bruno Andreoli in the First World War. A relief portrait is located on the façade of his home. The plaque and portrait refer to the same person, but appear in different places and forms. The memorial adds remembrance of Andreoli and the First World War to the church’s religious imagery.
Ceramics and art in Deruta
In Deruta, the Pinacoteca Comunale is housed in the 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli. The Ex Fornace Grazia, fully restored by the municipality, dates from the 16th century and now serves as a museum and exhibition center. The Museo della Ceramica was founded in 1898 by a group of local figures and is considered the oldest museum of its kind in Italy.
The Museo della Ceramica’s collection, arranged chronologically, spans medieval to contemporary ceramics. The tour also includes the remains of the Fornaci di San Salvatore and numerous ceramic finds. This museum therefore brings together a collection spanning a broad period and specific evidence such as kiln remains and finds: the collection offers a chronological perspective, while the objects found add individual material traces to the tour.
The Santuario della Madonna dei Bagni was built in 1687 at a site associated with a miraculous event, and is located not far from the center of Deruta. Over the course of three centuries, more than 700 majolica tiles were gathered there. Its origins and tile collection are two distinct aspects of this religious site.
