Capitan Loreto: Churches, Roman Tomb and Wine Culture
Accommodation in Capitan Loreto
Capitan Loreto brings together several themes that can shape a trip: the history of the Church of Santa Lucia, the private chapel of Sant’Antonio da Padova, the Roman tomb Il Torrione, and wine and cycling events. If you are looking for hotels in Capitan Loreto, these different highlights can help you decide what to focus on during your trip—from church and archaeological history to wine and cycling.
Santa Lucia: the story of a church built by the community
The history of the Church of Santa Lucia is closely tied to the commitment of the local community. In 1938, residents donated grain to fund construction work on the church, which was then under construction. The new church and the parish of Santa Lucia in Capitan Loreto grew out of the religious commitment and many sacrifices of the parish priest, D. Bernardo Angelini, and the local community. The grain donation illustrates one specific form of support; together with the establishment of the church and parish, it offers a picture of local religious and community history.
Sant’Antonio da Padova and the old Roman road
The chapel of Sant’Antonio da Padova stands in Capitan Loreto, on the old Roman road from Spello to Rivotorto. It was built in the 17th century as a private family chapel belonging to the Villa Adanti complex. The chapel contains a 17th-century painting depicting the saint holding the Christ Child.
The construction history and furnishings can easily be distinguished here: both date to the 17th century, but refer to different things—the building of the private family chapel and a painting depicting the saint in a specific way. Its location on the old Roman road adds a historical connection between Spello and Rivotorto.
Il Torrione: a Roman tomb
The structure known as Il Torrione is a Roman tomb, not a fortification. Its remains are incorporated into the surrounding houses. The tomb originally stood beside the Via Flaminia, which was also known as the Via romana.
Wine and cycling events
The Rassegna del Grechetto is also part of the local wine scene. An announcement dated June 20, 2025, gave the dates for the 33rd edition as June 27 to July 6. The 2025 edition featured ten evenings of Umbrian cuisine and local wine; the program also included good food and music, with numerous Umbrian wineries taking part.
Another clearly dated sporting event is Subasio Epyc 2025. The cycling event had a flexible start time between 8:00 and 9:30 at the Centro Polivalente in Capitan Loreto. The event also included Kids Epyc, a cycling event for children and young people at the Centro Polivalente.
Distinguish the cycling route from the motorcycle tour
Capitan Loreto is marked on the official map of the Ciclovia Assisi-Spoleto for Stage 1, from Assisi to Bevagna. There is also a separate route description for a motorcycle tour to Monte Subasio: it runs from Spello along the Statale 147 toward Capitan Loreto and San Vitale; from San Vitale, the route climbs toward Monte Subasio. Check current route conditions before setting out.
