San Quirico D'orcia: Palazzo Chigi, Horti Leonini and Via Francigena
Accommodation in San Quirico D'orcia
San Quirico D'orcia offers several points of interest to help plan your trip: architecture and pilgrimage history, garden art, local festival traditions, and stages of the Via Francigena. The themes range from a fresco program and a historic garden to walking routes and tastings. This lets you tailor your stay to the interests that matter most to you.
Palazzo Chigi and Pilgrimage History
Palazzo Chigi was built in the second half of the 17th century at the behest of Cardinal Flavio Chigi; it was designed by the architect Carlo Fontana. The building features a fresco program spread over two floors. It depicts allegories of the seasons, zodiac signs, elements, and arts, as well as mythological scenes. The building's history and its decorative program offer different insights into the palazzo: one focuses on the patron and design, the other on the varied themes of the paintings.
Another historical landmark is the Spedale della Scala. It was established in the 13th century as an outpost of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena and served medieval pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena. Preserved features include the Grancia's masonry structures from the 14th and 15th centuries, a courtyard, and a well. A loggia on the first floor is also among the surviving elements. The site thus connects the history of pilgrims with tangible architectural traces from several centuries.
Gardens and Cultural Traditions
The Horti Leonini were laid out around 1580 by Diomede Leoni as a classical Italian garden in the heart of San Quirico d'Orcia. Its sections differ markedly: the lower part is more formally designed, while the upper part is more natural in character. There, a centuries-old holm oak wood is crossed by winding paths. The division into two sections offers a concrete way to appreciate the garden's design: you can see it as a transition between a more formally ordered layout and a more natural woodland character.
Since 1971, the contemporary sculpture exhibition Forme nel Verde has been held in the Horti Leonini. The garden and contemporary sculpture thus offer distinct cultural points of interest. One leads to the history of a classical Italian garden, the other to an exhibition of sculptures in this setting.
The Festa dell'Olio also brings together various activities. These include trekking, tastings with olive oil producers, and guided tastings in collaboration with AICOO tasting experts. Walking and olive oil are both at the heart of the event; specific date planning is a separate consideration.
Festival and Town History
The Museo del Barbarossa Orfeo Sorbellini presents the history of the festival and introduces the town's four historic districts: Borgo, Canneti, Castello, and Prato. The competitions of the Alfieri and Arcieri, as well as historic newspapers and archival documents, are also among its subjects. The presentation therefore covers the districts, competitions, and written records alike.
The museum also displays the original costumes from the historic imperial procession of Emperor Frederick I of Swabia and his wife Beatrix of Burgundy. Once a year, the costumes are used for the historical reenactment and procession. Alongside the documents and competitions on display, visitors can therefore see a tangible link to the historic procession.
Via Francigena and Surroundings
The Via Francigena stages provide two distinct points of orientation: Stage 35 runs from Ponte d'Arbia to San Quirico d'Orcia; Stage 36 starts there and continues to Radicofani. Stage 36 can be traveled on foot or by mountain bike. Comparing their endpoints shows San Quirico d'Orcia as the destination of one stage and the starting point of the next.
A few kilometers from San Quirico d'Orcia, the Cappella di Vitaleta stands in a rural setting. It can be reached from the SP 146 in the direction of Pienza or from the SR2 Cassia via unpaved roads; walking paths also lead there. Check road conditions before setting out. The chapel adds a site outside the town center to the range of points of interest, as well as a journey for which road conditions should be taken into account.
