San Gimignano combines a distinctive historic townscape with art, museums and the Via Francigena. The historic center sits on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Its architectural unity and original urban layout have been preserved. When planning your stay, you can therefore start by asking whether you are mainly interested in architectural history, art, a walking stage or a wine tasting.

Towers and the Historic Townscape

The skyline of San Gimignano is defined by 14 distinctive towers. One of them is the Torre Grossa, also known as the Torre del Podestà: built in 1311, it is 54 meters tall and remains the tallest tower in the town. Piazza della Cisterna is one of the two main squares; its central well defines the square’s appearance. The Rocca di Montestaffoli also tells the story of the town: the fortress was built in the 14th century.

Visitors interested in religious buildings will find a range of historical and artistic features. San Gimignano Cathedral houses masterpieces of 14th- and 15th-century Italian art. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Ponte is a small Romanesque church from the 13th century, probably built on the remains of an older church. Its extensive fresco cycle depicts Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Cenni di Francesco painted it in the early years of the second decade of the 15th century. The face of the Madonna and Child in Glory fresco was painted during the youthful years of Simone Martini.

Museums and Works of Art

The Palazzo Comunale, also known as the Palazzo Pubblico, houses the San Gimignano Civic Museum and Picture Gallery. The Musei Civici cover a broad sweep of history, with themes ranging from Etruscan finds to contemporary art. The Museo Archeologico e della Via Francigena also has a section on medieval glass and pottery making.

The Museo d’Arte Sacra is located in the former chaplains’ dormitory. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, bas-reliefs, illuminated manuscripts, textiles and silverwork from churches and monasteries in the surrounding area. These include Bartolo di Fredi’s Madonna della Rosa, considered one of the Sienese painter’s most refined works. The Spezieria di Santa Fina offers a glimpse into the medieval history of the hospital: it was attached in 1253 to the Spedale Santa Fina, which had been founded in the mid-13th century.

Walking Stage or Wine Tasting

For travelers planning a stage of the Via Francigena, the route is a practical reference point: it passes through San Gimignano, and Stage 31 ends in the historic center. If you would like to include wine in your stay, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience – La Rocca offers wine tastings by advance reservation, with guidance from experienced sommeliers. The route and the wine tasting offer two different reasons for a trip, which you can take into account when planning your schedule.
