Castelluccio: Castle, Grancia and History
Accommodation in Castelluccio
Castelluccio combines a medieval castle with a history that ranges from fortified agriculture to ecclesiastical and cultural connections. Three perspectives help put the place in context: its location between two streams, the architectural traces of the castle, and historical events associated with Castelluccio.
Location between streams and valleys
The medieval castle of Castelluccio stands on a hill between the Miglia and Astrone streams; both flow into the Orcia. Castelluccio also lies on the road connecting the Val di Chiana with the Val d’Orcia. For orientation, it is therefore helpful to consider the castle’s location and its connection to the road separately. Together, they give an impression of Castelluccio’s landscape and regional setting.
Castle, Grancia and church
Castelluccio is a medieval castle and part of the La Foce estate. Its architectural features include two round corner towers and remains of the old defensive walls. The towers and wall remains show different elements of the fortifications and give the complex a distinctive architectural profile.
The history of agricultural use is also clearly defined in time. In 1390, part of Castelluccio was converted into a fortified grancia. Here, a grancia was a fortified agricultural estate used for farming and controlling the area. This function continued until 1787. The information refers to part of Castelluccio and thus explains a particular phase of use in the history of the place.
The church of Santi Bernardino e Andrea Apostolo was built within the castle in 1783. Its construction date is four years before the end of the grancia’s agricultural function. The two dates mark different, closely timed aspects of Castelluccio’s history: the construction of a church within the castle and the end of the agriculturally oriented grancia.
Historic routes, traditions and culture
The Via Francigena is also part of the area’s historical context: Castelluccio is considered an old stopping point along this route. According to tradition, San Bernardino da Siena preached in Castelluccio in the early 15th century. The route connection and this religious episode are two distinct historical points of reference.
The archaeological history includes more systematic excavations carried out on the initiative of Leone Mieli, which led to the discovery of several tombs in Castelluccio. These archaeological discoveries complement the architectural and religious aspects of the area’s history.
Castelluccio di Pienza is also one of the venues for the Incontri in Terra di Siena festival. The festival offers a specific cultural occasion; its program may change. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance.
Choosing Castelluccio as a destination
Castelluccio is particularly worth considering as a hotel destination if the castle and its history of use, or its historical connections, are the focus of your trip. A festival visit requires different planning from a trip focused on the historical themes themselves: in this case, choosing the right event date is also important. You can start by deciding whether to plan your trip mainly around the historical themes or around a specific event.
