Pievescola brings together hiking trails, historic buildings and the landscape of the Montagnola Senese. There are several ways to plan your trip: a longer hike, a shorter out-and-back walk to a ruin, or the architecture of the town. The trails and buildings give you specific points of reference to help decide which themes you would like to shape your stay.

Hiking: duration, elevation gain and destinations

Sentiero 107 starts in Pievescola and leads to Villa La Suvera; from there, it continues through the forest along a mule track. It is described as a two-hour hike, with 365 m of ascent and 110 m of descent. The ascent is therefore considerably greater than the descent—a useful distinction to bear in mind when considering the time estimate alongside the elevation profile. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The abandoned San Michele quarry lies at an elevation of 585 m along Sentiero 107. From there, you can enjoy a broad view across the upper Val d’Elsa. Together with the mule track and forest section, this creates a transition between a wooded stretch of trail and expansive valley views. The route thus combines a specific trail description with a distinctive landscape feature.

Sentiero 109 is a 30-minute out-and-back walk to the Romitorio di Motrano. Its starting point is on the road that descends to Pieve a Scuola. This gives you two different time frames to consider when planning your day: two hours for the hike on Sentiero 107 and 30 minutes for the out-and-back walk on Sentiero 109. Check local conditions for this trail before setting out, too.

The Romitorio di Motrano is a ruin built against limestone cliffs. The ruin’s relationship to the cliffs defines the character of this destination. Unlike Villa La Suvera, the emphasis here is on its ruined state; the two buildings therefore offer different architectural points of reference for travelers interested in culture and history.

Buildings and their setting

Villa La Suvera is located just above Pievescola. Despite later Renaissance additions, it retains a medieval character, clearly visible in its base and towers. These features give the building’s description a concrete form: the Renaissance additions sit alongside visible elements of its medieval character.

The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista stands in the center of Pievescola, at the foot of the Montagnola Senese. This gives you two distinct points of reference: the church in the center and the villa just above the town. When finding your way among Pievescola’s buildings, this distinction is useful without reducing both structures to the same architectural type.

Landscape and local tradition

The quarry area of the Montagnola Senese extends into the Pievescola area, lies within SIC 89 and has high landscape and natural heritage value. This landscape perspective complements the specific trail destinations and buildings with another aspect of the area. It connects Pievescola thematically with the Montagnola Senese without equating individual trails with the quarry area.

The Sagra del Fungo di Pievescola is also considered a traditional event. This adds another possible reason to visit alongside hiking and architectural history. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the event dates in advance.
