Explore Monteguidi through its architectural history, works of art and literary connections. Two routes also include the town in their itineraries, with landscapes to enjoy along one of them. If you choose a destination for its cultural themes, you’ll find medieval towers, religious buildings and connections to painters and literature here. The highlights can be considered separately: the townscape and churches, works of art, historical and literary connections, and routes and landscapes.

Towers and Churches in the Townscape

Two medieval towers can still be seen along the main street. One of them is attached to the parish church. The towers are therefore not only part of the town’s architectural history, but can also be located along a specific stretch of street. The parish church of Chiesa dei Santi Andrea e Lorenzo is a significant feature of the historic townscape, although it has changed considerably from its original form.

Its history also includes an architectural change: two churches were later combined into a single building with a joint dedication to Saints Andrew and Lawrence. The building’s current form and shared dedication are thus part of a history that encompasses both changes to the church and the development of the townscape.

Works of Art and Their Origins

The parish church houses La Madonna del Rosario, a significant painting by Alessandro Casolani, dated to the early 1590s. Another work of art, the 16th-century Visitazione by the Sienese painter Marco Bigio, comes from the altar of the Compagnia della Visitazione in another religious building in Monteguidi, near the south gate. A painting in Chiesa della Visitazione is attributed to Sodoma.

The works offer different art-historical points of interest: Casolani’s painting is associated with the parish church, while the origin of Marco Bigio’s work from an altar is recorded. The wording deliberately remains an attribution in the case of the work attributed to Sodoma. The focus is therefore on named works and their respective connections to the religious buildings.

Literary and Historical Connections

The painter Augusto Bastianini was born in Monteguidi in 1875. His family history is also connected to the town: his family owned a palazzo on Via Cavour, which was later donated to the municipality. His birthplace and his family’s property offer two distinct local connections to Bastianini; the palazzo can also be located by its street.

A literary connection comes through Carlo Cassola’s novel La ragazza di Bube: the character Mara is from Monteguidi. The novel was adapted into a film in 1963, starring Claudia Cardinale. This connection is specifically tied to the character’s origins and the novel’s later film history.

Historically, Monteguidi was also among the agricultural estates represented at the Palio di Casole. The town’s history thus extends beyond buildings and individuals to include the Palio.

Routes and Landscapes

The La Via del Mare cycling loop reaches Monteguidi after passing through Casole d’Elsa. The approach to Monteguidi along this route offers panoramic views. La via dei Vescovi reaches the town as a stopping point on the stage from Radicondoli to Casole d’Elsa. From Monteguidi, this route follows the ancient road of Fontegaia through agricultural landscapes and pastures.

The route descriptions offer different points of reference: on La Via del Mare, Casole d’Elsa comes before Monteguidi in the stated order; on La via dei Vescovi, Monteguidi lies on a stage between Radicondoli and Casole d’Elsa. Check the latest information on both routes before setting out; conditions along La via dei Vescovi may change.
