Buriano: Trails, Springs and History
Accommodation in Buriano
If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Buriano, you can plan around several specific highlights: trails through the Montalbano landscape, springs, historic sites and a farm with educational and social functions. These themes offer different experiences. Consider whether you’d rather spend your time on routes through the hills, exploring historical traces or visiting Baugiano.
Trails with different highlights
The Lucciano-Montorio-Buriano scenic route passes through small villages and the olive groves of the Montalbano hills. The Itinerario del Montalbano is distinguished above all by its trail surface: it runs mostly along unpaved paths. If you’re choosing based on the landscape or trail surface, these offer different points of reference: villages and olive groves are the focus of the scenic route, while the Itinerario is mostly unpaved.
The Anello del Sasso Regino circular trail begins near the village of Buriano and reaches the rock formation known as Sasso Regino. This gives it a different focus from the scenic route: here, the rock formation is the named destination, while the scenic route is defined by its villages and olive groves. The three routes can therefore be distinguished by different features without suggesting that they follow the same route.
Springs and practical information
The Fonte di San Busceto is located on the Montalbano mountain ridge at an altitude of 335 metres and provides fresh water all year round. If you plan to use the water, check its current drinking-water quality locally. The Fonte della Bettina can be reached by a short flight of steps and has a picnic table. The two springs therefore differ in their features: San Busceto is defined by its elevation and water supply, while Bettina has steps and a table. Check in advance whether the table is still there.
Church and historical traces
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Buriano was rebuilt in 1735 and is also known as the Complesso Monumentale di Buriano. A Way of the Cross with 14 images and an olive-wood cross from Jerusalem runs along the road around the church. Together, the church and the Way of the Cross offer a religious focus for your cultural itinerary.
Another historical landmark is Rocca Maestrino: its shape and masonry point to a distant military origin. In Pollaiolo, there were buildings powered by water; cadastral maps from the early 19th century recorded them as mills. These add evidence of the former use of water power to the religious and military traces.
Baugiano: farming and visitor facilities
Baugiano is an educational farm and a social farm. It produces and sells oil, cheese and cured meats directly. The offerings also include five themed areas, an amphitheatre and a picnic area. The farm thus combines its educational and social functions with its own production and various facilities. If you’re planning to visit for specific products or a particular facility, check in advance what is currently available and what facilities are provided.
