In Ponte Nuovo, walks along the Torrente Bure, a cycling route project and the history of Paterno are among the things that can shape a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Ponte Nuovo, plan around the focus of your trip: the walking routes provide specific information about their course and character, while the Ciclovia del Sole should be considered a planned cycling connection.

Walking along the Torrente Bure

CAI hiking trail 202 runs from Pontenuovo via San Quirico and Pian del Cerro to its junction with trail 32. The route is listed as 6.35 kilometres, with an estimated walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Taken together, the distance and time help you fit the trail into your day; the time is an estimate.

Another walk is “L'argine della Bure.” It follows the Bure embankment between Chiesina Montalese and Pontenuovo. A 2024 description of an organised walk characterised it as easy and suitable for everyone. The information about the two routes therefore differs: for the CAI trail, the distance and estimated walking time are the main details, while for “L'argine della Bure,” the focus is on its course along the embankment and the description of the organised walk.

The Ciclovia del Sole as a planned cycling connection

The Ciclovia del Sole is described as a project. The municipal project description from December 2024 envisages almost ten kilometres for the Pistoia section, from Pistoia railway station to the border with Montale. The planned route is intended to pass through Pontenuovo and Forramoro, then continue to Montale, Prato and Florence. Within Pontenuovo, Via Pontenuovo Croce and Via dei Guadi are part of the planned route; the Torrente Bure is to be crossed via a new pedestrian and cycle bridge.

A branch to Pistoia railway station is planned at Sei Arcole, from where cyclists can continue by train. The project aims to promote cycle tourism and sustainable mobility in the region. Since this is a planned connection and infrastructure details may change as work is completed, check the current route and cycling and rail regulations before setting out.

Paterno: place name and villa history

The place name Paterno is documented as far back as 1415. In the Pontenuovo area, the Sozzifanti family built the imposing Villa di Paterno between the late 16th century and the early years of the 17th century. The former villa and chapel were blown up in 1944 during the German retreat. The present-day villa was rebuilt after the Second World War and is a private residence.

During construction work on the Ciclovia del Sole in Pontenuovo, walls belonging to an oratory that was part of the former Villa di Paterno were uncovered in August 2025. The local history thus spans several clearly distinct phases: the name documented since 1415, the villa built by the Sozzifanti, the destruction of the former complex and its post-war reconstruction.

Landscape and getting there

The Torrente Bure offers striking views and provides a habitat for many different animal species. The landscape and wildlife are two distinct aspects of the Bure that, alongside the specific walking and cycling options, shape a stay in Ponte Nuovo.

Bus route 25O connects Pistoia, Pontenuovo, Santomato, Montale, Montemurlo and Oste. A timetable for the route is listed as valid from 4 June 2026. Check the departure times before travelling so your travel plans match the timetable.
