If you’re looking for a hotel in Momigno, deciding what to focus on during your trip can help you choose: the town brings together a long history of settlement, memorial sites, a named hiking route and a tradition of chestnut flour. Depending on whether you want to focus on cultural heritage, scenery or outdoor activities, you can choose a different theme for your stay. The following highlights offer specific ideas for things to discover in Momigno.

From Rural Community to Walled Settlement

Momigno was mentioned in 1064 as a small rural community. In the 13th century, it was a rural municipality; later, it developed into a walled settlement. No traces of the fortifications remain today; the distinctive character of the town is the only indication of its past. When exploring the town’s history, it is worth distinguishing this development from surviving architectural features: the parish church of San Donato retains parts of its medieval perimeter walls, while nothing remains of the fortifications.

Church, Park and Memorial Sites

On a terrace on the left-hand side of the parish church of San Donato lies Parco della Rimembranza di Momigno, at the highest point of the historic settlement. An entry compiled in 2019 in the national cultural heritage catalogue describes it as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the province of Pistoia. The park’s location and classification make it an important part of the town’s historic character.

In Parco della Rimembranza, next to the church of San Donato, stands the Monumento ai Caduti di Momigno on Via Fagno. It is dedicated to the people of Momigno who fell in the First World War. Another monument commemorates Anchise, Gerino and Ottavio Baldi and stands in the garden beside the church. The two memorial sites therefore relate to different people and memories. Together with the parish church, they offer specific points of interest if you’re interested in the town’s history.

Scenery and Hiking Route

According to its official designation, the landscape along the Margine di Momigno–Panicagliora road and the adjacent strip of land is of considerable public importance. The designation is based on a decree dated 26 May 1972. In the wider Marliana area, the landscape is mostly covered by dense chestnut woods; the hills often open out into gentle slopes where grapes and olives are grown.

If you’d like to include a hike in your travel plans, the Anello 2 – Sentiero della pietra circular route is one named option. It is 20.6 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 793 metres. The distance and elevation gain give you concrete benchmarks for deciding whether the route suits your plans.

Medioevalia and the Necci Tradition

The Medioevalia street arts festival takes place in Momigno in July. Craftspeople, entertainers, fire-eaters and theatre actors perform at various locations around the town. If the festival is relevant to your travel dates, check the specific event dates.

Necci are also part of the local tradition: they are flatbreads made from chestnut flour. The necci are cooked using stone testi, which are made by hand. The dish and the handmade cooking tools offer two specific insights into the food culture associated with chestnuts.
