Get to know San Rocco through its church, a memorial and local history dating back to the 17th century. There are also several options to consider when planning: a signposted hike from San Rocco to Bagnolo, and nature destinations with a starting point in Castelmartini. If you’re planning a stay, these specific themes can help you prioritise your interests.

Church, Remembrance and Local History

The Chiesa di San Rocco is a Neo-Renaissance church and serves as a central meeting place for religious celebrations and cultural events in the hamlet of San Rocco. It is both an architectural landmark and part of local community life.

The Lo stupore memorial commemorates the victims of the Eccidio del Padule di Fucecchio on 23 August 1944. It was inaugurated in the presence of Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Lo stupore is step-free and accessible to all citizens; the municipality last updated the relevant information on 13 June 2024. Check access conditions before your visit.

The history of the settlement is closely connected to the church: from the 17th century onwards, people settled in a settlement near the Chiesa di San Rocco. It had grown considerably by the end of the 20th century. After separating from San Silvestro in 1884, on which San Rocco had previously depended, the hamlet developed independently. It was recognised as a parish in 1887, and its development therefore differed from that of Larciano Alto.

Routes and Getting There

From Pistoia, the recommended route is via San Baronto and Lamporecchio, continuing to Larciano S. Rocco. An alternative provincial road runs via Cecina, Ceppeto and Biccimuri back to Larciano S. Rocco. Check road conditions before setting out.

For a hike, CAI Trail 824 runs over flat terrain from San Rocco to Bagnolo. The round trip is 12 km long.

Padule di Fucecchio and Area Le Morette

Another natural landmark is Area Le Morette, characterised by extensive reed beds and large areas of open water. It is considered one of the best places in the entire wetland for birdwatching year-round. The nature trail to the Area starts at Porto delle Morette in Castelmartini; the starting point can be reached on foot or by car. The Area is freely accessible year-round. Nevertheless, check access conditions before you travel.

The main entrance to the Padule di Fucecchio nature reserve is also in Castelmartini, on the Provinciale Francesca, which connects Montecatini with Fucecchio. Excursions and guided visits are often organised from Castelmartini to explore the Padule’s nature trails. If you have a particular date or programme in mind, check the latest information before making plans.

Events and Travel Planning

The 2026 Festa di Primavera in San Rocco included a traditional funfair. Larciano’s patron saint festival is dedicated to Saint Rocco. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific event dates. Depending on your interests, you can make a festival, the hike to Bagnolo or birdwatching at Area Le Morette the main focus of your plans.
