Piano Degli Ontani: Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Piano Degli Ontani
A circular trail to the Torre del Fattucchio, a moderate mountain biking and gravel route through the forest reserve, and the “Beatrice” cultural trail offer different ways to explore Piano Degli Ontani, combining nature and local history. This makes it easy to choose destinations based on your interest in landscapes, outdoor activities or culture.
Natural Landscape and Rock Formations
The Riserva Naturale dello Stato Piano degli Ontani is an Apennine mountain landscape with beech forests, mixed mesophilic woodlands, ridge meadows and montane heathland. The peaks of Poggione, Pizzo Alpestre and Monte Uccelliera rise along the upper ridge. The landscape therefore encompasses both woodland and open ridge areas, as well as named peaks.
One distinctive rock formation is the Torre del Fattucchio: this sandstone tower, several dozen metres high, overlooks the Sestaione Valley. The Buca delle Fate is a different, smaller natural feature—a hollow in sandstone rock from which air at a steady temperature rises. These two descriptions offer different points of interest for travellers interested in the area's geological formations.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
The circular trail to the Torre del Fattucchio is 8 km long and has an elevation gain of 270 metres. It starts at La Peschiera in Pian degli Ontani. Its length and elevation gain are specific details to consider when planning your outing; check trail conditions before setting off, as they can change. The circular trail is named for its destination, the Torre, which overlooks the Sestaione Valley.
A moderate mountain biking and gravel route also passes through the Pian degli Ontani forest reserve. It starts at the square near Albergo La Villa. There is a spring at the start where you can refill your water, and other springs are located along the route. While the circular trail to the Torre is described by its length and elevation gain, the cycling route is classified by difficulty level and the types of bikes mentioned.
Beatrice and Cultural History
The “Beatrice” cultural park and trail runs from the plaque dedicated to Beatrice in Piazza Acerone, through the cultural park on Viale Beatrice, and on to La Frassa. Beatrice Bugelli, also known as Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani, was an illiterate shepherdess and poet who lived in the 19th century. Her improvised songs in ottava rima brought fame and recognition to the Val Sestaione.
The Church of Santi Maria e Cirillo is also part of local history: it became a parish church in 1785. For earlier periods, it is considered likely that the area was a summer stop on shepherds' transhumance routes. This interpretation remains a possibility, not a certainty; it adds a historical perspective on pastoralism to the documented cultural sites.
Visitor Centre and Events
The “Fior di Pietra” visitor centre at the Biogenetic Reserve has an educational room. It offers environmental education activities and nature film screenings, and hosts thematic exhibitions, both temporary and permanent. The centre is open seasonally on weekends; access to events is organised. Check the specific opening hours and event arrangements before your visit.
Sagra del Neccio
The Sagra del Neccio is a local festival celebrating necci, a traditional mountain dish. It usually takes place towards the end of August. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
