Avane brings together two different interests in travel planning: medieval history and outdoor climbing. Castello di Avane represents the historical focus; the Falesia di Avane is a historic climbing crag with sectors of varying character. There is also a path to the hills of Avane, with panoramic views and traces of former agricultural use. You can plan your stay around whether castle history, climbing routes, or landscapes are your main interest.

Avane and Castello di Avane

Avane was first mentioned in a document dating from 952. Castello di Avane first appears in 1026 under the name “castellum de Avane”. During the conflicts between Lucca and Pisa, it became part of Pisa’s defensive system. The two dates mark different historical points of reference: the first refers to Avane, and the second to the castle. At Rosaiolo, historic fortification remains lie on the small Poggio di Rosaiolo, on the slopes of Monte Spazzavento near the river.

Climbing at the Falesia di Avane

The Falesia di Avane is a historic crag for outdoor climbing. Its sectors differ in the described wall and route characteristics. Valle dei Porci offers routes of medium to high difficulty on vertical walls. Baccanella is more accessible for beginners and includes routes on gently sloping slabs. When choosing a sector, you can therefore consider both the stated difficulty and the shape of the rock. The two areas offer different points of reference rather than a single, uniform route character.

The access path to the Falesia is near the medieval tower; a nearby parking area serves as a landmark. Check local access conditions and directions before your visit.

Paths and landscapes around the Fattoria di Vecchiano

The Fattoria di Vecchiano area has combined nature and history itineraries among ditches, canals, and the hills of Avane. One path leads from there to the hills and offers panoramic views as well as traces of former agricultural use. This focus differs from climbing: here, the landscape and its former use take precedence, rather than the difficulty of individual routes. If you are planning a guided excursion, check the current dates in advance; no fixed schedule is assumed. You should also check trail conditions on site.

Other regional connections

Vecchiano is one of the five municipalities through which the Strada dell’Olio dei Monti Pisani runs. The Migliarino, San Rossore e Massaciuccoli Regional Park also extends across the municipality of Vecchiano. These two references differ in scope: the Strada dell’Olio is a route through several municipalities, while the park reference describes the Regional Park’s extent across Vecchiano.
