If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Vietina, the focus of your trip can help you choose where to stay: scenery, marble-making traditions, or historic paths. Vietina is a particularly scenic place. Together with small settlements, it lies on the seaward-facing slopes of the Apuan Alps. The paths offer a tangible connection to the history of marble and lead to various named destinations.

Marble Transport and Traces of Historic Paths

The Via di Lizza was once used to transport large marble blocks from the Carchio quarries down to the plain. Holes for marble wedges and historic dry-stone retaining walls remain along the path. These traces complement one another: the wedge holes point to how the marble blocks were handled, while the retaining walls are part of the historic path. The Via di Lizza can therefore be understood both through its former transport function and its visible structural features.

The Lizza dei Bastioni is also part of this history of paths. It once connected Segheria di Vietina with the quarries of Monte Carchio. A description from 2025 records the first section, as far as the Chiesina dei Patrioti Apuani at Pasquilio, as visible. The date is important: it describes the situation at that time and says nothing about current trail conditions.

Routes with Different Destinations

The routes differ in their course and destination. A municipal description from 2025 lists the Sentiero del Boccalo as a branch from the Via di Lizza to the former Albergo Pasquilio. A route of the Sentiero dei Poggi described in 2023 runs from Segheria to Vietina; current trail conditions may differ. A description of the group hike on June 15, 2025, calls the Sentiero del Tersetto a loop that leads to Vietina. Conditions on this path may also change.

Another route runs from Segheria via Vietina, Polle, Tascio, and Pasquilio, then back; the return route is listed as following the entire Via di Lizza. This route was described for an excursion in 2023. The Sentiero della Linea Gotica runs from Vietina to Col di Melo. After 24 minutes, the vegetation thins and the view opens onto the coast as far as the Gulf of La Spezia; visibility and trail conditions may vary.

The information offers different pointers for choosing a route: a route described as a loop, a trail passing several named places, or a path with a described view of the coast. The 24-minute time refers to the point where the vegetation thins along the Sentiero della Linea Gotica.

A Glimpse into Vietina’s Past

Vietina’s history also includes a 17th-century oratory. It was dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony of Padua and is also known as the Oratorio della Madonna Addolorata. The building no longer exists. The historical memory of the oratory adds another aspect of the place’s history to that of its paths, without implying that the different routes need to be treated as the same.

Vietina combines a scenic location in the Apuan Alps with named paths and traces of the marble industry. If you’re interested in the routes, their different destinations and the time references may help with your planning.
