Fornovolasco lies in the Parco delle Alpi Apuane, in a narrow valley where two streams meet. The destination can be explored through several distinct themes: hiking trails and Monte Forato, the Grotta del Vento, and the history of the church and ironworking. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore first consider whether natural attractions or local history are the main priority.

Location in the valley and the Apuan Alps

The Grotta del Vento is located in Fornovolasco, in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli, in the heart of the Apuan Alps. This brings together three levels of location: the village itself, the municipality and the mountain range. Together with its setting in a narrow valley, this makes Fornovolasco both a clearly located village and part of the Apuan landscape.

Hiking destinations and Monte Forato

The natural rock arch at Monte Forato is 32 metres wide and 26 metres high. These measurements give this natural feature a tangible scale and distinguish it by its shape from the peaks in the Comprensorio delle Panie.

From Fornovolasco, Monte Forato can be reached via trail 6 to Foce di Petrosciana or via spur trail 12 directly to the rock arch. The destinations distinguish the two options: one leads to the Foce, the other directly to the arch. When planning your hike, you can therefore first decide which of these destinations you want to focus on.

Hiking trails to the peaks start from Fornovolasco in the Comprensorio delle Panie. This means the hiking focus extends beyond the individual rock arch: peaks in the surrounding mountain area are also accessible destinations. These named hiking destinations offer different ways to shape your stay, without combining Monte Forato and the peak trails into a single route.

A guided swing experience in the rock arch is also offered at Monte Forato; the tour lasts approximately five hours. Bear this approximate duration in mind if you plan to make the experience a focus of your trip. It differs from the route information for the other hiking destinations, each of which is described by its destination.

The church and the history of ironworking

The present-day Chiesa di San Francesco di Assisi was built in 1545 and became an independent parish in 1610. The two dates mark different milestones: the church’s construction and its later ecclesiastical status. This makes it possible to distinguish its construction history from its development as a parish.

Fornovolasco’s history also includes iron production and ironworking, documented since the 14th century. This dates back further than the construction of the present-day church; becoming an independent parish was a later milestone in the church’s history. Ironworking and the church thus offer two distinct historical perspectives on the village.

Your travel decision therefore comes down to two parallel priorities: hiking destinations with clearly specified routes, and the historical development of the church and ironworking. If you are looking for a hotel, you can base your choice of destination on whether you want to associate Fornovolasco primarily with hiking in the Apuan Alps or with its local history.
