Calomini: Eremo and Parish Church of San Tommaso
Accommodation in Calomini
Calomini lies on a hill in a green, sunnier location protected from the elements. The landscape and sacred buildings shape the character of the place. Notable destinations include the small chapel dedicated to the Madonna Addolorata, the parish church of San Tommaso, and the Eremo di Calomini. The three sites offer different perspectives: a small religious chapel, a church above the village, and an architectural complex at the foot of a cliff. When choosing Calomini for a trip, you can focus on architectural history, rock architecture, or spiritual interests.
Rock Architecture and Devotion at the Eremo
The Eremo di Calomini is an impressive architectural complex at the foot of an overhanging cliff about 70 metres high. It extends 15 metres into the rock. The two measurements describe different aspects of the site: the approximate height refers to the cliff above the complex, while the depth refers to the structure within the rock. The site can therefore be viewed both in terms of its architecture and its relationship with the cliff.
Inside the Eremo is a statue made of willow wood, venerated under the name Madonna della Penna. This religious detail adds a distinct focal point to the spatial impact of the complex. Rock architecture and devotion to Mary thus offer two different perspectives on the same place.
Church of San Tommaso: History and Location
The parish church of San Tommaso stands in a commanding position above the village of Calomini. Its construction is dated to around the 10th century; the church has been recorded in the diocesan register of Lucca since 1260. The construction date and the register entry provide two distinct points of reference: an approximate date for its origins and a specific year in which it was recorded.
The church is accessible only via a steep, narrow road that runs past gardens and cultivated fields. This makes the approach different from the journey to the Eremo: you can drive directly there, with only a very short walk remaining. For planning purposes, these are two different ways of approaching Calomini’s religious buildings.
Hiking Trail and Spiritual Retreat
The Sentiero dell'Eremo di Calomini leads from Gallicano along the Turrite, across a stone bridge, and steeply uphill to the Eremo on an old mule track. The hiking route is quite different from driving directly: here, the steep climb is part of the route, while after the drive only a very short walk remains. If you choose the hiking trail, check the trail conditions before setting out and plan for the climb accordingly.
Spiritual retreats are also offered regularly at the Eremo: Comunità Santa Caterina APS organises them, with communal prayer and life in the hermitage. This is a distinct reason to visit, alongside an interest in church architecture and rock architecture. If you are considering a retreat, check the specific dates as part of your travel planning.
