Retignano lies at the foot of Monte Alto and combines a striking mountain landscape with hiking trails, local history and recurring festivals. On the ascent along the road to Arni, Retignano is the first village you reach. From here, you can see almost the entire Stazzemese Valley. If you like to consider nature and cultural interests together when choosing a destination, the trails and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo offer different insights into the area.

Hiking and Scenery Around Retignano

The Volegno–Retignano hiking route first passes through a forest and later becomes a mule track before reaching the village. The route passes the Grotte Bianche, which are considered old breccia quarries.

Another described trail passes through the Gordici area on Monte Alto. Numerous caves and sinkholes define the karst landscape there.

The Retignano–Passo dell’Alpino–Rifugio del Freo loop starts at the church in Retignano; Trail 123 also begins there. Provincial roads 9 and 10 are also useful for getting your bearings in the area: they pass through Ruosina, Retignano, Levigliani and Terrinca.

San Pietro Apostolo and the History of the Village

San Pietro Apostolo is a prominent landmark in the village’s history. The church may have been built before the 8th century. Its bell tower dates from 1616, and it houses a 15th-century silver processional cross. These three details relate to different aspects of the church complex: the uncertain dating of the church’s construction, the year the bell tower was built, and the age of an artwork.

The history of the village also stretches far back: Retignano was already the site of a Ligurian-Apuan village. In 932, the village of Ratignano and its chapel were donated to Lucca Cathedral. It is important to distinguish between the names and dates: the historical account of 932 mentions Ratignano and a chapel, while San Pietro Apostolo is associated with the village of Retignano today.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Sagra del Tordello takes place every year. In 2023, it was scheduled for June 29 to July 2; dates may vary from one edition to another. So check the dates of the relevant edition when planning your trip. At the festival, tordelli, grilled dishes and desserts are served from 7 p.m. The program also includes singing competitions and live orchestras. Food and music make the festival a cultural event in its own right, alongside the area’s hiking and history.

Another tradition is the Luminaria “Gesù Morto,” which takes place in Retignano every three years on Good Friday. The Sagra del Tordello and the Luminaria thus differ both in frequency and occasion. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, take into account the date of the relevant edition or the three-year cycle. This helps you plan around the festivals’ distinct schedules.

Retignano therefore offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: hiking trails with different landscape features, the Church of San Pietro Apostolo with its historical details, and two festivals, each with its own schedule. You can decide what to prioritize depending on whether you mainly want to hike, explore local history or combine your stay with a festival.
