Farnocchia: Hiking Trails to Monte Gabberi and Village History
Accommodation in Farnocchia
Farnocchia combines hiking destinations such as Monte Gabberi with local history ranging from medieval mining to sacred art. If you choose a destination for its trails and cultural attractions, you’ll find both here in clearly identified places: hikes starting in Farnocchia, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, and traces of the past in the municipal area. The Sagra del Magnifico Tordello is also part of the village’s annual calendar.
Hiking on Monte Gabberi
Monte Gabberi is 1,108 meters high. From Farnocchia, you can reach it on foot in 40 to 50 minutes. It is considered a natural terrace overlooking the sea; from there, the view stretches from the Gulf of La Spezia to Livorno and the island of Gorgona, weather permitting.
CAI Trail 114 connects Valdicastello, Sant’Anna, Foce di Farnocchia, Farnocchia, and Culerchia near Le Mulina. Trail 114A starts in Farnocchia at the junction by the Marginetta di Cima alle Selve and continues via Pietralunga on Monte Gabberi to Il Callare. While the description of Trail 114 names several places along a connected route, Trail 114A describes a route with its own starting point and additional waypoints.
A loop hike starts in Farnocchia, passes Monte Gabberi and Foce di Farnocchia, continues to Monte Lieto, and returns to Farnocchia. It is rated difficulty level E and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Difficulty and duration are subjective estimates. The route description therefore includes both a return to the starting point and an approximate duration. Conditions and timing may vary on this loop hike; check the details before setting out.
Church and History
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo is believed to date from before the year 1000. Its five altars are decorated with multicolored inlaid marble. The church also houses a ciborium made by Lorenzo Stagi in 1497, which is now used as a baptismal font. The church’s tentative dating, its altar decorations, and the present-day use of a dated work of art thus come together in one place.
The mining history is also tied to specific locations: in 1349, lead silver and antimony were mined at Bottino and Cuor della Vena in the municipal area. The village’s history thus encompasses not only the church but also two named sites of historical mining.
Farnocchia Castle is thought to have stood between the hamlets of Broto, Le Piastre, and Cerro. In 1202, Lucca destroyed the castle because of its loyalty to the Cattani; it was rebuilt almost immediately afterward. The Filarmonica di Santa Cecilia was founded in Farnocchia in 1850.
Summer Festival and Sant’Anna
The Sagra del Magnifico Tordello takes place every year in Farnocchia for almost the entire summer. Exact dates vary from year to year. When planning your trip, check the event dates for the relevant year.
Sant’Anna di Stazzema can also be included in your hiking plans. The Museo Storico della Resistenza di Sant’Anna di Stazzema is located in the former village primary school, near the church square at Via Coletti 22. The same trail can also be taken from Farnocchia to Sant’Anna di Stazzema; the Farnocchia–Sant’Anna route is part of the Sentieri Alta Versilia.
