Monteggiori is a destination for travellers who want to consider historic settlement patterns, art and hilly landscapes when choosing where to stay. The Castello di Monteggiori is documented in writing as far back as 1224 and belonged to the nobles of Bozzano.

Castello di Monteggiori: History and Wall Remains

The area of present-day Monteggiori corresponds to the area once occupied by the Castello di Monteggiori. In the south of the settlement, a continuous, U-shaped section of the enceinte survives; its maximum preserved length is about 80 metres. The Castello’s only gate retains its original form. Together, these details provide both a spatial reference to the former castle and specific architectural features: the course of a section of wall and the shape of the gate.

Art and Concerts from Spring to Autumn

MAMMO – Museo Arte Moderna Monteggiori – is dedicated to the work of artists who lived, worked or passed through Monteggiori in the years after the Second World War. The artists’ connection to the place thus ranges from living there to working there to passing through; it is not limited to artists who settled there permanently. At the same time, MAMMO is a lively art space for contemporary and emerging artists. Here, a historical connection to the post-war years sits alongside a contemporary one.

Regular concerts take place from spring to autumn on the PALCO AL BOSCO stage in the garden of the Associazione Musica Monteggiori. The garden lies at the foot of the Monteggiori woods. Individual concert dates may vary. So if you would like to combine your stay with a concert, check the relevant event dates. The season indicates when the programme takes place; the specific date is relevant to your planning and should be checked separately.

Hillside Setting and Trail Connections

Monteggiori lies on the slopes of Monte Gabberi and offers views of the Camaiore and Pietrasanta valleys, as well as the coast. Alongside its historical and artistic connections, the setting gives the village a distinct landscape focus. Travellers who factor landscape views into their choice of destination will find clear sightlines here to two valleys and the coast. This also makes Monteggiori easy to appreciate as a destination independently of its castle and art.

Monteggiori is in Section A of the network of hill trails between Capezzano, Santa Lucia, Monteggiori, Montebello and Camaiore. There is also a specific trail detail: Via di Poggio, on the Anello C2 – Camaiore Antiqua loop, ends at the paved municipal road leading to Monteggiori. For orientation, these are two different kinds of information: the section designation places Monteggiori within the hill-trail network, while the Via di Poggio detail identifies the endpoint of a particular trail.
