Bus and Walking Routes
Fiorentina has a bus stop called Fiorentina posta. It is served by routes 031, 011, 02A and 26I; route assignments may change. Therefore, check the current timetable before travelling. The bus stop name is a specific reference point for planning your journey.
The Le Grotte necropolis is a 40-minute walk away. The route is partly uphill and passes through meadows and woodland. For day planning, the details answer different questions: the minutes describe the walking time, while the gradient and landscape describe the route. The Centro di Archeologia Sperimentale “Davide Mancini” lies on the way to the necropolis, in the meadowland known as Campo dell’Arpia. The 40 minutes put the walk to the necropolis in a timeframe, while Campo dell’Arpia locates the Centro in the landscape. A necropolis is an ancient burial ground; the term thus identifies the type of archaeological destination.
Archaeological Sites
The Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia includes the area where the Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia was built. The upper part of the park contains the Acropolis of Populonia, with temples, buildings, mosaics and Roman roads. The details distinguish two spatial levels: the urban area encompassed by the park and the Acropolis in the upper part of the park. Temples and buildings represent structures, mosaics are decorative elements, and Roman roads are routes within the site. This archaeological context thus connects the broader historical setting with the different features of the upper area.
Nature Reserves and Coastal Landscape
The WWF Padule Orti Bottagone Oasis is in the municipality of Piombino and is a 126-hectare regional nature reserve. It lies within Special Area of Conservation IT5160010, Special Protection Area IT5160010, and a Ramsar site. Sterpaia Coastal Park includes an eight-kilometre sandy beach awarded the Blue Flag, 124 hectares of dunes and hinterland dunes, and 155 hectares of woodland and agricultural clearings. For comparison, the unit of measurement matters: kilometres indicate beach length, while hectares indicate area. The 126 hectares refer to the oasis; the figures for dunes and hinterland dunes, as well as woodland and agricultural clearings, describe other named features of the park.
Finding Your Way on the Geodetica
The visitor centre for the WWF Padule Orti Bottagone Oasis is on the SP40 “Base Geodetica” between Piombino and Riotorto. The so-called Geodetica connects Piombino with Riotorto. Roads branch off from the Geodetica, providing access to Sterpaia Coastal Park and its beaches. The details show the different roles: the Geodetica connects the two towns, while the side roads provide access to the park and beaches. The visitor centre is located separately on the SP40.
