Discover Suvereto
Accommodation in Suvereto
Suvereto combines historic churches and buildings with museums and its own program of events. Its highlights range from the origins of the Chiesa di San Giusto, dating from the 9th to the 12th century, to the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, built in 1881. The Palio delle Botti and events in the historic town center also shape how visitors experience the town. If you are planning a hotel stay, these different highlights can help you decide when to travel.
Churches and sacred art
The Chiesa di San Giusto holds a special place in Suvereto’s history: during the transition from the Diocese of Populonia to today’s Diocese of Massa Marittima, it served as a cathedral. Its façade, portal and quatrefoil rose window are designed in the Tuscan Romanesque style. History and architecture come together here, inviting visitors to look beyond any one architectural detail.
The Chiesa della Madonna sopra la Porta was built in 1480 and expanded in 1772. It houses a 16th-century painting depicting the Madonna Immacolata with the Child. The building’s history and the dated painting offer two different ways to explore the church: its development over time and a work with a clearly identified religious subject.
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in 1881 by the Compagnia della Misericordia. The church houses the Museo di Arte Sacra. Its collection consists mainly of 17th- and 18th-century paintings, as well as 15th-century wooden sculptures attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta. Different periods of creation thus come together in one building: the 19th-century church and artworks from earlier centuries.
Monastery, fortress and other collections
The Chiostro di San Francesco was founded in 1286 by the Aldobrandeschi counts of Santa Fiora. It is described as having a square ground plan with five arcades on each side. Its clear layout makes it easy to appreciate both its form and its date of origin.
The Rocca Aldobrandesca also reflects a long building history. It was built from the 13th century onward at the behest of the Aldobrandeschi, on the remains of earlier fortifications. Together with the Chiostro and the churches, it forms a historical arc that spans earlier fortifications and medieval foundations through to later buildings.
The Museo Artistico della Bambola in Suvereto offers a different kind of collection, housing more than fifty dolls. Alongside the collections of religious art, this museum is dedicated to a clearly defined subject.
The Palio and events in the town center
The Palio delle Botti takes place twice a year: in May as the Palio di S. Croce and on the eve of Ferragosto as the Palio dell’Imperatore. Teams roll empty 500-liter barrels over the paving stones of the historic center. The Palio is also part of the national barrel-racing circuit of the Associazione delle Città del Vino.
From May to September, the historic town center hosts music events, performances, historical reenactments, competitions, talks, literary evenings, film screenings and tastings of local products. The Palio has two specific annual dates, while the events program spans a longer seasonal period.
Planning your stay
The tourist information and visitor services office is in the historic center of Suvereto, at Via Magenta 2, and is run by Parchi Val di Cornia. As you plan, you can first decide whether to focus on churches and art, the varied architectural histories, or the Palio and seasonal events. These themes offer different ways to shape your stay, without tying it to a particular type of hotel.
