Pitigliano combines a distinctive tuff landscape with traces of different eras. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether to focus on archaeological sites, architectural history or the town’s Jewish heritage. Local traditions and the surrounding valleys are also among the things that make Pitigliano distinctive.

Landscape and Historical Layers

Pitigliano sits on a tuff outcrop 313 metres above sea level. Green valleys, crossed by the Lente and Meleta rivers, border the outcrop. The town’s history spans several eras: Pitigliano preserves traces of prehistoric, Etruscan and Roman civilizations. This breadth of history can help guide your planning: archaeological remains and later buildings tell different chapters of the town’s story, rather than focusing on just one subject.

Jewish Heritage and Local Tradition

A Jewish community in Pitigliano is documented from the 15th century. As it grew in the 19th century, the town acquired the nickname “Little Jerusalem”. The Museo Ebraico di Pitigliano is a starting point for visiting the temple and exploring the former ghetto. The route includes a ritual bath, a cellar, a kosher butcher’s shop, a matzo oven and a dye works. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

A local dish is also connected with this heritage: Sfratto is a traditional Jewish dessert from Pitigliano. The annual SettembreDivino coincides with the grape harvest; dates and programme vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for that year. This makes it possible to understand Jewish history, local food culture and the connection with the grape harvest as distinct but interconnected aspects of the town.

Etruscan Sites and Collections

At the Museo Archeologico all'aperto di Pitigliano, the Necropoli etrusca del Gradone includes single-, double- and triple-chambered tombs, as well as a demonstration burial of Larth and Velia. The Necropoli di San Giovanni in the open-air museum includes tombs dating from the 6th to the 4th–3rd centuries BC. The Museo Civico Archeologico della Civiltà etrusca di Pitigliano offers another perspective: its collection is predominantly Etruscan and consists mainly of finds from the Archaic period of the 7th and 6th centuries BC. These different dates help distinguish the sites and collections by their respective historical focus.

Architecture, Water and Walking Routes

The Medici Aqueduct was built between 1636 and 1639 to carry water from the springs of the Meleta River to the fountain in Piazza della Repubblica. The link between source and destination shows the purpose of the structure. The Via dei Lavatoi walking route offers another way to explore the town’s history. It leads to two areas of Pitigliano with preserved old washhouses, where women did their laundry from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria also brings together several building phases: it dates from the 12th–13th centuries and was completely rebuilt in the 15th–16th centuries. It is believed to be Pitigliano’s oldest church. Rows of stone seats, steps, pavilions and fantastical statues remain in Parco degli Orsini. The park also contains the ruins of the church and monastery of San Francesco, built in the early 16th century to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.

Plan Your Museum Visits and Journey

The Museo di Palazzo Orsini has 21 visitable rooms, all fully frescoed, housing art collections, sacred art and the castle’s original oil mill. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit. Together with the archaeological collections, the museum offers a different way to explore history from the town’s tombs and buildings.

The stated driving route is via the A1 towards Rome, the Orvieto exit, the SS71 towards Bolsena, the SS2 Cassia and the SS74 towards Pitigliano. Check the route using your current navigation before setting off. This lets you tailor your stay to the subjects that interest you most without treating the different historical sites and collections as a single visit.
