Rocchette di Fazio lies on a rocky spur above the Albegna River and was considered an important fortress because of its strategic defensive position. The ring of defensive walls and the Rocca Aldobrandesca define the town’s historic heart. When choosing a hotel in Rocchette, you can consider whether historic architecture, walking trails or a combination of both should be the focus of your stay.

Rocky setting and distant views

The stone houses of Rocchette di Fazio stand on the ridge of high limestone cliffs above the Albegna. From the Rocca Aldobrandesca, on clear days, the view stretches from Monte Amiata to Argentario. The rocky setting and distant views offer two distinct perspectives on the town: the architectural relationship between the houses and the ridge, and the wide panorama on clear days.

Ring of defensive walls and Rocca Aldobrandesca

Rocchette di Fazio was first mentioned in 1216 under the name “Rocchetta” as a “castrum.” In the 13th century, the Aldobrandeschi built the defensive walls to protect the old Aldobrandesca castle. The ring of walls is hexagonal and has two round-arched entrances, one of which is called Porta del Castello. Five towers still stand along the walls, and the tallest is part of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. The fortress was completely rebuilt by Siena in the 15th century.

The dates mark different stages in the town’s history: its first mention, the construction of the walls and the later rebuilding of the fortress. The shape and individual features of the ring of walls can also be distinguished: the hexagonal plan describes its form, while the two round-arched entrances are separate features of the fortifications. One bears the traditional name Porta del Castello.

Santa Cristina and an April tradition

A Templar cross can be seen above the portal of the Pieve di Santa Cristina, and a rose window is set into the upper part of the façade. The church of Santa Cristina has frescoes dating from 1400. Both the façade details and the dated artworks are cultural points of interest in the town.

Every April, Rocchette’s folk tradition of competitions in improvised singing is revived, associated with the poet Tribuno Tonini. If you are travelling this month, check the specific event dates in advance.

Comparing the walking trails

The Sentiero del Parco is a moderately difficult walking trail, 3 kilometres long with an elevation gain of about 200 metres. The Bellafreddi trail is also moderately difficult, but is a loop: it is approximately 3 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 270 metres. Although the trails are similar in length, the Bellafreddi trail is a loop; the elevation figures are about 200 metres for the Sentiero and 270 metres for the Bellafreddi trail.

The Bellafreddi trail starts in Rocchette di Fazio and is marked in red. It passes a fountain restored by Leopold of Lorraine in the 18th century and includes a preserved section of the old Strada del Sale road surface. From Pozzo Diavolo, you can reach the Sentiero del Parco along the Albegna, making it possible to create a longer loop. Trail conditions can change, so it is worth checking them before setting out.

A longer perspective on two wheels

A 40-kilometre route for gravel and mountain bikes reaches Rocchette di Fazio after a climb of about three kilometres. The two figures describe different sections: 40 kilometres is the total route length, while about three kilometres is the climb up to the town. The cycling route therefore has a considerably longer total distance than the walking trails, which are approximately three kilometres long. Surface conditions may vary along the cycling route.
