Roccatederighi lies on a spur of Monte Sassoforte and offers wide views across the northern Maremma. The medieval village is nestled among large rhyolite rocks; its towers and rooftops follow their contours. In the upper part of the village, the rock outcrops are known as “I Massi”; from here, the view stretches to the sea and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Rocky Landscape and Local History

The Roccatederighi lava dome formed in the Upper Pliocene, around 2.6 to 2.0 million years ago. This date places the formation of the landscape long before the medieval buildings: geological formation and local history are two distinct timescales that reveal the character of the village from different perspectives.

Finding Your Way Around the Old Centre

An arched gateway between rocks and walls marks the entrance to the old centre; beyond it, lanes, arcades and steps continue. On the edge of the historic centre, the Church of San Martino Vescovo stands directly beside “I Massi”. It houses a crucifix dating from the 15th century, attributed to the Tuscan artistic milieu. The Torre dell’Orologio was built on the rocky spur in 1911 and towers over the historic centre. From Piazzetta Senesi, you can reach it via Salita della Torre.

Fortifications, Mining and Art Nouveau

The upper part of the village contains the remains of the ancient fortress and sections of the original walls, dating from the 14th century. Another historical trace is the copper mine: it was first worked in 1833 and was located just outside the castle. Villa del Paradiso is an Art Nouveau building outside the built-up area of Roccatederighi. Together, these features of the village span the remains of fortifications and mining history through to Art Nouveau architecture.

August Events

The Palio Storico delle Contrade takes place every year on 14 August and includes a donkey race involving residents and tourists. In the competition along the main street, five contrade compete: Corso, Torre, Tramonto, Nobili and Ventosa. They vie for a palio banner designed by a different artist each year. “Medioevo nel Borgo” is also held annually, on the first weekend of August since 1993. For planning purposes, the two events have different date arrangements: the Palio is tied to 14 August, while “Medioevo nel Borgo” is tied to the first weekend of August.

Walks and a Regional Perspective

In the Tufolino area, there is a staircase and several houses carved into the rock. The woodland around Roccatederighi is ideal for relaxing walks. The route “Seguendo le tracce della trachite in Maremma” passes through the hilltop settlements of Roccastrada and Roccatederighi. A walk in the woodland around the village and a route through two hilltop settlements therefore offer different spatial perspectives.
