Montelattaia: Estate, chapel and cork oak landscape
Accommodation in Montelattaia
Montelattaia is a destination for travelers interested in historic estate architecture and a cultural landscape shaped by cork oaks, fields and woodland. When choosing a hotel, you can consider the focus of your trip: the buildings offer a different perspective from the rural surroundings, while regional routes extend the view beyond the individual place.
Estate and chapel
Fattoria di Montelattaia
Fattoria di Montelattaia is a Renaissance estate on a small hill along Provincial Road No. 19 from Montemassi, at kilometer 6.
Villa-Fattoria Monte Lattaia
The Villa-Fattoria Monte Lattaia complex extends across a wide area, with avenues, tree plantings, rural buildings and associated service buildings. Its “dritta” is an access avenue lined with double rows of pine or cypress trees.
Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate
The Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate is incorporated into the residential buildings of Fattoria di Montelattaia. Above the altar is a painting of the Madonna and Child and Saint Anthony Abbot.
Cork oaks and rural landscape structure
Significant remnants of cork oak cultivation have been preserved in the Monte Lattaia area. A remaining stand of cork oaks is partly laid out in rows and partly grouped as woodland; today it is of considerable landscape importance. The historic rural setting of Villa-Fattoria Monte Lattaia combines tree crops and woodland with arable land, as well as meadows and pastures in a pattern of enclosed fields.
The cork oak forests of Tenuta di Lattaia in Roccastrada are protected under Article 136 of Italian legislation on cultural heritage and the landscape, by a decree dated February 3, 1959. The landscape value of the stand at Monte Lattaia is a separate aspect from the protection of the cork oak forests of Tenuta di Lattaia.
Historical depth and regional routes
Remains found near Montelattaia along the Torrenti Rigo and Asina point to settlement continuity from the 6th century BC to the Migration Period. This places the Renaissance buildings within a broader historical timeframe: the remains point to a settlement history whose beginnings lie many centuries earlier.
The Strada del Vino e dei Sapori Monteregio di Massa Marittima passes through several places and rural areas in the municipality of Roccastrada, including Montelattaia. The route complements the consideration of individual buildings with a regional perspective.
For the third edition of the BioBike Tour in 2024, a mountain-bike itinerary with two circular routes was planned. It was to pass through the rural areas between Castel Di Pietra, Casteani, Tatti, Borgo di Perolla, Castellaccia, Monte Lattaia, Sassofortino and Roccatederighi. The circular routes were described as moderate to easy and were to have an average elevation gain of about 900 m. These details refer to the 2024 edition; if you are planning a specific route today, check the latest route information.
