Monticello Amiata lies at an altitude of 734 metres on the road to Monte Amiata and near the Poggio all'Olmo Regional Nature Reserve. The protected area is just south of the village. Its visitor centre is located in Monticello Amiata, Località Prato Laforma. A stay here combines medieval fortifications and named cultural sites with a tangible connection to the protected landscape. Check the current contact details and opening hours before visiting the visitor centre, as they may change.

History in the village centre and beyond

The medieval fortifications of Monticello Amiata are almost completely intact. They include the historic gateways of Porta Monticelli and Porta San Francesco. A significant old cistern lies beneath the main square. These two sites point to different aspects of the historic townscape: the fortifications and their gates, and an older structure beneath the square.

In the centre, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo was rebuilt in the mid-13th century. Between 1815 and 1832, it was extensively remodelled in the Neoclassical style. The church also houses a panel by Bartolomeo Neroni, known as Il Riccio, created between 1535 and 1540. Outside the village is the Oratorio della Compagnia di San Sebastiano. It dates from the 15th century and preserves a painting by Manetti and a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian. The Santuario della Madonna di Val di Prata is also nearby. It can be reached from Parco della Rimembranza outside the village and is documented as far back as 1198.

Casa Museo and planning your visit

The Casa Museo focuses on domestic daily life and work in a hilltop village at the end of the 19th century. It recreates a mountain farmhouse in the Amiata area from that period, with authentic furniture and household objects. The reconstructed interiors include a stable, a storeroom and an old animal-powered oil mill. Alongside the living quarters, the museum therefore highlights rooms and objects associated with storing supplies and working.

The Casa Museo offers guided museum tours. The Via delle Fonti and Via della Castagna educational trails can be visited by prior arrangement. Check the visit arrangements before your trip.

Chestnut trails and nature

The Sentiero Ontanelli passes through the chestnut grove on the Ontanelli estate, where you can see the monumental Castagnone tree. The Via della Castagna is a themed walking and excursion route through centuries-old chestnut groves in the area around Monticello Amiata. The Birimacola route continues towards Monticello. The descriptions focus on different things: a particular grove with a named tree, ancient chestnut stands in the surrounding area, or the direction towards the village.

Festa della Castagna

The Festa della Castagna takes place every year around the beginning of October. Check the current event dates before your trip. At the 40th-anniversary Festa della Castagna, chestnut jam, roasted chestnuts and sweet polenta were prepared or offered. Together with the chestnut trails, the festival gives the chestnut theme both a landscape and a culinary dimension.
