Sasso Dʼombrone lies near the municipal boundary with Civitella Paganico, formed by the Ombrone River. The river and valley also shape the town’s history: the small castle and its Rocca served to control the Ombrone Valley. They also controlled the historic Traversa dei Monti, which connected the Grosseto area with Montalcino. Even before the year 1000, Sasso Dʼombrone guarded the bridge over the Ombrone. The town’s history can be explored through buildings and paths that reveal different sides of the place.

Castle, churches, and historic traces

In the upper historic part of town, a panoramic promenade runs around the castle. From there, views stretch to the hills of Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia, as well as to the Ombrone Valley towards Paganico. The Rocca and its setting give the walk a historical dimension, while the views also draw attention to the landscape around the town.

The churches, too, preserve different chapters of local history. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo houses a 15th-century crucifix of Sienese origin. The Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1872. As a former grancia, or farm estate, of Siena’s Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, Sasso Dʼombrone is also linked to a historic Sienese institution.

Another stop on the way to the river is the Antiche Fonti del Sasso. These fully preserved springs lie on the Sentiero del Fiume, which leads from Sasso Dʼombrone towards the Ombrone. Walking along the Sentiero del Fiume towards the Ombrone, you will also encounter the town’s built heritage in the form of the fully preserved Antiche Fonti del Sasso.

Walking paths along the Ombrone and through the countryside

The Sentiero del Fiume is entirely a walking trail and leads close to the Ombrone. One educational section focuses on local flora and fauna. This includes the uphill nature trail La via del fiume, where signs describe the plants along the route, including oaks, broom, and hawthorn. Near the river, the trail also passes a picnic area from which you can descend to the Ombrone. Improvement work is underway on the Sentiero del Fiume; check trail conditions before your visit.

The Sentiero del Monastero takes you through a different landscape. It connects Sasso Dʼombrone with the Monastero di Siloe and passes through woods, olive groves, and vineyards. Improvement work is also underway on this trail. Comparing the two routes, you will find different focal points: the Sentiero del Fiume leads close to the water and has an educational section on flora and fauna, while the Sentiero del Monastero connects the town with the monastery and crosses the landscapes described above.

Local life and activities

At the entrance to Sasso Dʼombrone, coming from the bridge, you will find Parco Comunale di Bellacosta. The park is also a landmark for the long-running Sagra del Capitone: its event area lies between the historic centre and Parco Bellacosta. Capitone, an eel prepared in various ways, is considered a typical dish of Sasso DʼOmbrone.

The Campetto Polifunzionale is available for tennis and five-a-side football. Use requires a prior request to the local association that manages the facility; check availability in advance. Albus Alpacas in Sasso DʼOmbrone offers interactive visits by prior reservation only. If you plan to take part in a visit, make an advance request and confirm availability.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up these options: historic buildings and views, walking paths along the Ombrone, or the landscape of the Sentiero del Monastero. The trails differ in their stated destinations and experiences; the festival, the typical eel dish, and local activities add further local themes to the picture of the town.
