Le Vedute: Nature and Cultural History
Accommodation in Le Vedute
Le Vedute brings together the forests of the Cerbaie and architectural and cultural history. For planning your trip, there are several themes to choose from: nature and hiking, historic religious buildings, archaeological context, and events with literary and biographical connections.
The Cerbaie Forests and Hiking
The Cerbaie forests lie within the municipality of Fucecchio, between the hamlets of Pinete, Torre, and Vedute. The Cerbaie are designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). Drosera rotundifolia occurs in the SCI; it is considered a carnivorous plant from the Ice Age. In the Cerbaie forests, 7.5 kilometers of hiking trails have been restored. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between botanical interest and hiking: the plant offers a specific botanical point of interest, while the trails provide opportunities for hiking. This lets you decide how to prioritize the nature themes based on whether plants or exercise in the forest matter more to you.
Another aspect concerns the forests of the Ex Opera Pia Landini Marchiani. They were the subject of a municipal project to enhance their tourist and recreational value. This history of development offers a distinct perspective on the relationship between forests and leisure.
Chapels and Architectural History
A brick chapel stands in the park of Villa di Poggio near Le Vedute. It was built in 1798 by the Benvenuti family of Fucecchio and is dedicated to Saints Candido and Teresia (SS. Candido e Teresia). An oratory adjoins Villa Bassi near Le Vedute. Francesco Antonio Bassi built it in 1836; between 1878 and 1880, it was extended to create a small sacristy. The buildings offer different points of cultural and historical interest: the chapel highlights brick construction and its dedication, while the oratory offers insight into its development over time and the purpose of its later extension.
Villa Bassi and Cultural Events
Villa Bassi is associated with Indro Montanelli’s childhood memories. Since 2011, concerts and events in his memory have been held there. In December, Le Vedute’s “Salotto Bono” reopens for a literary tea. These cultural themes have different emphases: Villa Bassi is connected with Montanelli’s memory and events, while Salotto Bono offers a seasonal literary format. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert or the literary tea, check the dates before making plans.
Archaeological History
Archaeology is another part of Le Vedute’s heritage. The Capanno del Banti complex near Le Vedute is classified as a single bivouac, or hut floor, dating from between the Late Gravettian and the Early Epigravettian. This offers a different historical perspective from the architectural history of the religious buildings: here, the focus is on prehistoric cultural periods, while the buildings are associated with dated construction phases from the 18th and 19th centuries.
