Castiglion Fiorentino sits on a small hill overlooking the broad Valdichiana Aretina. In the historic centre, medieval walls, gates and lanes lead up to the Cassero; the centre is built onto an ancient Etruscan structure. This combination reveals the town’s different historical layers. For travellers interested in architecture, archaeology and art, it offers a clear focus; events and trails provide further possible reasons to visit.

Architecture from Several Periods

The Cassero complex preserves its medieval defensive structure. Porta Fiorentina consists of a double gate: the outer portal, built of rusticated sandstone, leads to an inner opening with three arches. An image of Saint Michael is displayed above it. The Vasarian Loggia is also a testament to the Renaissance. The Mario Spina Theatre adds a 19th-century interior to the architectural experience, including gilded stucco and a painted vault. Medieval defensive architecture, gate construction, the Renaissance and theatrical decoration thus offer different ways of exploring the town’s history.

Archaeology, Sacred Art and Collections

The Museo Civico Archeologico focuses on the ancient Etruscan centre and the surrounding settlements. Its exhibits are spread across five rooms; the period covered ranges from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, from the 3rd to the 6th century AD and beyond.

The Museo della Pieve di San Giuliano houses more than a hundred works of sacred art from various religious buildings in Castiglion Fiorentino. The Pinacoteca Comunale is located in restored rooms of the church of Sant’Angelo al Cassero, which was built on medieval foundations. Its collection includes paintings as well as examples of medieval and Renaissance goldsmithing. The distinction between the collections is clear: the archaeological museum offers an introduction to the Etruscan past, while the two art collections focus on sacred works, painting and goldsmithing.

Events Throughout the Year

The Castiglioni Film Festival takes place every year in the last week of July at the Cassero Archaeological Area. The programme includes open-air film screenings, as well as talks and interviews with actors and directors. During Maggio Castiglionese, the entire month of May is dedicated to exhibitions of local food and craft products, agricultural machinery demonstrations, and cultural events such as conferences and exhibitions. Around Ferragosto, the Vintage Festival brings the historic centre to life with vintage crafts, clothing and objects, live music and traditional menus.

The event themes are spread across different times of the year: May features products, demonstrations and cultural events; late July brings film and talks; and around Ferragosto there are vintage offerings. If one of these festivals is the reason for your trip, check the exact dates for the relevant year.

Routes and Activities

The Badia Trail is a 7.2-kilometre circular walking route with 210 metres of elevation gain. Check trail conditions before setting out. On the Via Romea Germanica, Castiglion Fiorentino is the endpoint of Stage 80 and the starting point of Stage 81; by contrast, the Badia Trail is described as a single loop by its distance and elevation gain. The Stradone Granduca Pietro Leopoldo route can be explored on foot or by bicycle. For this route too, it is advisable to check conditions before setting out.

The Strada del Vino Terre di Arezzo passes through Castiglion Fiorentino and is 200 kilometres long in total. It places the town on a longer wine route. Visitors can also learn about techniques and processes for making Tuscan ceramics in a ceramics workshop. A guided tour of Castiglion Fiorentino explores the town’s history and artistic treasures. For both activities, check booking details in advance, as they may change.
