Discover Monclassico
Accommodation in Monclassico
Monclassico and Presson are considered historic villages at an altitude of 770 metres above sea level. The five villages featured in Dimaro Folgarida are Monclassico, Dimaro, Carciato, Folgarida and Presson. If you are interested in culture and local history, you will find the Church of San Vigilio and the sundials in Monclassico. Visiting them offers different perspectives: at the church, history and furnishings take centre stage; at the sundials, it is the variety of design, technique and materials.
The history of the Church of San Vigilio
The earliest surviving records of the Chiesa di San Vigilio date back to the 13th century. In 1771, the church was enlarged and took on its present appearance. The date therefore marks a later alteration, not the beginning of the church’s documented history. The Chiesetta di San Vigilio stands on the hill and has three altars and late Gothic sculptures. If you are interested in culture, you can distinguish three aspects here: the early written records, the enlargement and the furnishings featuring late Gothic works of art. History and architecture offer different points of reference rather than describing a single period of construction.
Sundials in a variety of designs
The sundials of Monclassico vary greatly in form, technique and material. Each expresses the artistic personality of its creator. The sundials are therefore about more than simply listing different examples: their form, the techniques used and their materials each offer a distinct perspective on the works. You can compare the different designs and explore the shared theme from several angles. The trail presents this variety as a connected highlight, while each sundial displays its own artistic signature. If you are interested in art, craftsmanship or local cultural landscapes, the sundials complement the historical perspective of the church with a focus on design.
Route and timing
When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between two different route descriptions. The sundial trail through Monclassico and Presson is flat and can be explored by bicycle, including mountain bike, as well as with a stroller. The trail reaches Monclassico via a convenient pedestrian underpass, where you can begin your visit to the sundials. The visit takes about an hour and a half. The approximate duration gives you a useful time reference for planning; you can also take the flat terrain and the stated ways of getting around into account.
Another described itinerary starts at the meeting point by Monclassico’s train or tram stop. Participants follow a signposted uphill path through the village to Piazzetta del Riuso. This route climbs uphill, making it quite different from the flat sundial trail. The two descriptions give you different guidance for planning your visit.
An experience with tastings and a camera obscura
The Una sottile linea d'ombra experience includes a small tasting of brulè, jams and natural syrups. These products are made by a local farm. To finish, participants enter a camera obscura. The experience thus combines a taste of local products with a special final activity. When comparing the two experiences, Una sottile linea d'ombra, with its tasting and camera obscura, offers a different focus from the sundial trail, where the flat route and the visit lasting about an hour and a half are central. When choosing, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer to focus on visiting the sundials or enjoy an experience with a tasting and camera obscura.
