Mezzolombardo: Wine, Whisky and History
Accommodation in Mezzolombardo
Mezzolombardo combines a long winemaking tradition with tours and tastings, historic buildings and routes into the surrounding area. When planning your trip, you can easily distinguish the options by interest: wine and whisky each have their own visitor experiences, while squares, churches and paths reveal other sides of the town.
Winemaking and Teroldego
Wine has been made in Mezzolombardo for thousands of years. Teroldego Rotaliano is considered a full-bodied, aromatic red wine from Mezzolombardo. Cantina Rotaliana describes itself as the “Casa del Teroldego”; its 300 members are committed to preserving the grape variety.
At Cantina Rotaliana, you can book guided tours of the wine cellar and vineyard. The “Diario di viaggio” experience at Agricola Foradori begins in the estate’s vineyards and vegetable gardens. This experience is listed as available from October 15, 2025, to December 31, 2026. Check dates and availability before making plans.
The Agricola Foradori experience includes visits to two cellar rooms: one contains wooden barrels and vats, while the other houses terracotta tinajas. It concludes with a tasting of biodynamically produced wines paired with raw-milk cheese. This allows you to choose between a visit that includes a vineyard and wine cellar, a tour of differently equipped cellar rooms, or a wine tasting with cheese.
Whisky experiences and museum
Villa de Varda’s bookable “inQuota Whisky Discover” experience includes a guided distillery tour, a visit to the Cose di Casa Museum and a tasting of four inQuota whiskies. The “inQuota 360° Whisky Edition” adds a visit to the mash fermentation room and a whisky workshop. It also includes a tasting of four inQuota whiskies, this time paired with local products. The two experiences therefore differ mainly in the workshop and the visit to the fermentation room.
The Cose di Casa Museum is divided into three sections and displays around 1,600 objects related to agriculture, winemaking and distillation in Trentino. The museum visit places whisky in a broader context alongside these subjects. If you are especially interested in the production process, the 360° experience, with its visit to the fermentation room and workshop, offers a different focus from the guided distillery tour and museum visit.
Historic buildings and neighbourhoods
The ancient Piaz neighbourhood, with its alleys, palaces and grand villas, tells the story of Mezzolombardo as a trading community. The buildings of Castello della Torre also offer insights into different periods: its oldest section is a massive 13th-century tower incorporated into the central residential building. The castle is a Renaissance residence with terraced gardens. The complex also includes the 16th-century Chapel of S. Apollonia in the panoramic gardens.
Castello della Torre is not open to visitors, but you can view it from Mezzolombardo’s historic streets. The churches offer further insights into the town’s history: the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist was built in the historic centre between 1846 and 1849. The surviving bell tower of the former church dates from 1752 to 1765 and now stands on its own in the square. San Pietro was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in 1534. Palazzo del Podestà is an imposing 18th-century residence with lavish decoration.
Bridge, trails and getting your bearings
The 130-metre-long Ponte sospeso Mezzolombardo suspension bridge connects Toresela with Colle San Pietro. It is a ten-minute walk from the historic centre. The Toresela route starts in the centre, behind the main church, and heads towards Colle San Pietro. The Ferrata Val del Ri starts in the upper part of Mezzolombardo, at the rocky peak known as Toresela, and is suitable for experienced hikers. You can use this information to distinguish a short walk to the suspension bridge from a route or a via ferrata suitable for experienced hikers.
Above Mezzolombardo, Monte Fausior is home to deep gorges carved out by the Rio Fai.
