Canal San Bovo: Culture, Hiking Trails and Rafting
Accommodation in Canal San Bovo
Explore Canal San Bovo through its cultural themes and outdoor activities. The Ecomuseo del Vanoi covers topics related to the Vanoi; there are also collections, hiking trails and a rafting route. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, it helps to decide first whether culture, hiking or paddling will be the main focus.
Culture at the Ecomuseo del Vanoi
The Casa dell'Ecomuseo is located at the entrance to Canal San Bovo and serves as a cultural centre dedicated to promoting the area and its traditions. The ground floor has three exhibition rooms. It also features an introduction to the Ecomuseum's seven themes, a reception and bookshop area, a room devoted to water, and a small children's area. The individual displays may change.
The Ecomuseo del Vanoi is a museum spread across the area. It covers the environment, landscape, places and human activities of the Vanoi, and is therefore not limited to a single exhibition room. The Piccolo Museo della Val dei Faori offers a different perspective: it preserves ethnographic objects and tools that Giovanni Fontan collected over time.
The RadioMuseo del Vanoi collection includes radios, radio equipment, record players and music boxes. It also contains historical books and magazines, as well as other material from the past. Taken together, the collections are clearly distinct: the Piccolo Museo focuses on ethnographic objects and tools, while the RadioMuseo features equipment, music media and printed material.
Water, forests and hiking trails
Water features in a variety of contexts. The Anello dell'Acqua themed trail starts at the Casa dell'Ecomuseo and explores the area through this theme. There is also a room devoted to water on the ground floor of the Casa. Rafting on the Torrente Vanoi offers another way to engage with this element.
The Valzanca and Valsorda state forests make up the Caoria forest complex and lie entirely within Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park. The state forests of Caoria can be reached via Provincial Road No. 56, which runs from Canal San Bovo to Caoria. The names of the forest areas and the route of the road are useful reference points when including these landscapes in your travel plans.
For hikers, two described options differ in route layout and starting point. The Sentiero Etnografico di Caoria offers more than 25 km of trails between Val Sorda and Val Zanca. By contrast, the Cima Cece da Caoria circular trail starts at Pont de Stél, which is accessible by private vehicle throughout the summer season. The trail information thus provides different points of reference: the Sentiero's extent between the valleys, and the named starting point and seasonal accessibility of the Cima Cece circular trail.
The Cima Cece da Caoria circular trail passes through the Lagorai's characteristic natural landscape, crossing alpine meadows and passing high-altitude porphyry formations. Numerous remains from the First World War can be seen on these formations. The route description therefore combines landscape features with visible traces of history, without requiring an additional detour as part of the circular trail.
The 5 km rafting route on the Torrente Vanoi runs from Canal San Bovo through the Valle della Cortella to Pont de Oltra. It is intended for experienced paddlers. When water levels are low, it may also be suitable for less experienced paddlers with appropriate support. Unlike the hiking trails, suitability here depends not only on the waterway but also on the paddler's experience: the route is suitable for less experienced paddlers only under the stated water and support conditions.
