Calliano
Accommodation in Calliano
Calliano lies in a landscape of vineyards and mountains and has medieval origins. The town offers several distinct themes to help you plan your trip: buildings and historical memory, the Rio Cavallo and its waterfall, and seasonal events.
History and Architecture
Castel Pietra is located in Calliano, at the foot of Castel Beseno. In the historic centre, stately palaces have frescoed façades. These buildings give the townscape a distinct architectural focus. Local churches include San Lorenzo and the Chiesetta dei Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano. San Lorenzo dates from 1724, is neoclassical, and commemorates the Trentino-Tyrolean victory of 1487. Calliano’s medieval origins provide a broader historical context.
The dates answer different questions: 1724 is the date of the church, while 1487 is the historical event it commemorates. Calliano’s medieval origins, by contrast, describe the town’s longer history. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the buildings from the town’s history and the commemoration of the battle.
The Rio Cavallo and the Landscape
The Rio Cavallo is a mountain stream that flows down from Folgaria and into the Adige. The stream’s distinctive waterfall is at Zambel in Calliano; its water flows fresh and clear. This gives you both the watercourse’s geographical route and a specific natural feature in the town: the stream flows as far as the Adige, and the waterfall is located at Zambel. Vineyards and mountains also shape Calliano’s landscape.
Events and When to Visit
The Battle of Calliano is commemorated each year with a historical re-enactment; the Sagra dell’Addolorata also takes place in summer. These offer two different timing cues: the re-enactment is annual, while the Sagra is a seasonal summer event. If you want to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific date.
Calliano also takes part in the Magnalonga, a food walk considered the first food-and-wine walk in Trentino and organised together with Volano and Besenello. This event focuses on food, while the re-enactment centres on commemorating the battle. The events therefore differ in theme.
A Route to Help You Plan
The Sentiero dell’Arte is an easy trekking route on unpaved paths. It is also suitable for families, but not for pushchairs. The easy rating, the path surface and the exclusion of pushchairs answer different planning questions. If you are travelling with a pushchair, the route is not suitable; its stated suitability for families is a separate consideration.
