Lazfons appeals to travellers who want to include an alpine pasture hike, a high-altitude pilgrimage site or regional traditions in their travel plans. One specific hiking destination is the Latzfonser Kreuz, which can be reached on a circular hike from Kaseregg. Recurring events and a range of summer and winter activities offer further ideas for planning your stay.

Circular Hike and Pilgrimage

From Kaseregg, a scenic circular hike leads through the Latzfonser Alm to the Latzfonser Kreuz at 2,311 metres. The cross is the highest pilgrimage site in South Tyrol and one of the highest in Europe. The route and destination offer different highlights: the hike takes you through the alpine pasture, while the religious significance takes centre stage at the cross. If you would like to combine natural and cultural heritage on one tour, you’ll find both here.

The veneration of the pilgrimage site also shapes the yearly calendar. Every June, the “Black Jesus Christ”, a black, carved Gothic wooden cross, is carried from the parish church in the village of Latzfons to the Latzfonser Kreuz, where it remains throughout the summer. The cattle drive is celebrated in Latzfons every year on the second weekend in September. A religious custom in June and a traditional event in September thus offer two different seasonal reasons to visit.

Alpine Pasture Trails and Winter Activities

Popular starting points with parking for the Latzfonser Alm include Kaseregg, KĂĽhhof and Steineben; the Ă–berst car park is another option for winter tours. Winter activities vary in both destination and type of tour: a winter hike or snowshoe hike leads from the KĂĽhhof car park to the Klausner HĂĽtte, while a ski tour leads from Steineben to the Lorenzispitze (Cima S. Lorenzo) on the Latzfonser Alm. The alpine pasture also has a natural toboggan run and a family toboggan run.

Another activity is the “Nock” climbing garden in the Tinnetal valley. It offers outdoor climbing opportunities for beginners and advanced climbers, as well as climbing courses. The small, unspoilt and romantic Tinnetal valley lies west of Klausen and stretches south of Säbener Berg as far as Latzfons. This adds a dedicated climbing option alongside the hiking and winter trails.

Traditions and Local History

St. Jakob Church in Lazfons also has an architectural connection to local history: Meran architect Albert Torggler was responsible for its extension project in 1999. A culinary highlight from 2015 was the speck tasting competition, where the sample from Pfattner Johann butchers received the gold award. A total of 47 South Tyrolean speck hams were compared.
