Valderice brings together coastal scenery, trails through Mediterranean vegetation and local culture. The municipality has about six kilometres of coastline on the Gulf of Bonagia, with striking views stretching along the coast to the Aegadian Islands. Other highlights include Parco Urbano di Misericordia, hiking trails and places where regional cuisine and history come to life.

Coast and Nature in Valderice

The coastline along the Gulf of Bonagia shapes part of Valderice’s landscape. Views from Valderice include both the coast and the Aegadian Islands. When planning your trip, you can take in two distinct perspectives: the Gulf coastline and the islands on the horizon.

Parco Urbano di Misericordia covers just over 19 hectares. Facilities for visitors include equipped areas, a children’s playground, bocce courts, tables, benches, drinking fountains and toilets. Typical Mediterranean maquis grows in the park, including dwarf palms, spurges, mastic shrubs, thorny broom and esparto grass. These plants give the green space a distinctly Mediterranean character, while the play and seating areas provide additional amenities.

Trails and Routes

MT6 is a 2.33-kilometre loop trail in Parco Urbano della Misericordia. It starts and finishes at the park entrance. Check trail conditions before setting out. The stated loop distance provides a clear guide for planning a circuit through the park.

Sentiero Monte Misericordia begins in Valderice’s built-up centre on Via Caposcale. At first, unpaved and paved sections alternate. The trail enters the valley of Monte Misericordia and then climbs its western slope. After the first 7.3 kilometres, it continues along a paved side road between cultivated vineyards and olive groves. The information provided highlights a clear difference between the two trails: MT6 has a set loop distance within the park, while the description of Sentiero Monte Misericordia focuses on its route, terrain and changing scenery.

Culture, Fishing and Cuisine

Molino Excelsior houses a Centro di Cultura Gastronomica. It aims to preserve and promote local recipes and culinary techniques. The mill also serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, workshops and conferences. As an example of industrial archaeology, it features preserved machinery and Liberty-style architectural decorations dating from the early 20th century. Culinary tradition, a cultural venue and industrial history come together here as distinct aspects of the mill.

In Bonagia, the Museo del Mare e della mattanza is housed in a 16th-century watchtower, beside a tuna fishery whose present form dates from 1626. The museum tells the story of the Tonnaroti and displays archaeological finds from the surrounding seabed. A tower, a church and a central courtyard remain from the Tonnara di Bonagia. The present-day building dates from the 17th century; the tuna fishery was probably already operating in the 13th century.

Events also contribute to the area’s cultural life: Bosco di Misericordia hosts cultural and religious events, as well as religious reenactments, especially in December. If you plan to visit at this time, it may be useful to check event dates in advance.

Traditional Valderice cuisine includes pani cunzato, bottarga and cassatedde cu broro. Fish plays an important role in these dishes, reflecting the intense fishing activity in Bonagia. These dishes and the history of the Tonnaroti give local cuisine a distinct connection to the area’s fishing traditions.
