Eredità between the Irminio landscape and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Eredità
In Ragusa’s landscape plan, Eredità is designated as an area of archaeological interest. The surrounding landscape also includes the Irminio and the Petrantica agriturismo, located in Contrada Eredità. Protected nature, archaeological sites and historic buildings offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.
The Irminio landscape
The Macchia Foresta del Fiume Irminio Nature Reserve covers 134.70 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Ragusa and Scicli. It is part of the Natura 2000 site ZSC ITA 080001 Foce del Fiume Irminio. The lower Irminio plain stretches from the slopes of Eredità to the beaches of Marina di Ragusa, Gravina and Playa Grande.
Petrantica borders the integral nature reserve at the mouth of the Irminio River. The reserve at the river mouth lies about 1.5 kilometres south of Petrantica, towards the sea, and is considered a site of natural interest. The Irminio nature reserve has a visitor centre in a manor house, with a small natural history museum. You can park your car at the visitor centre. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Archaeological sites and historic buildings
Caucana, a late antique and Byzantine settlement, is located at the Anticaglie archaeological site in Santa Croce Camerina. The small church dates from the 6th century AD and has three aisles and a mosaic-decorated bema. Its dating and distinctive architectural features give the site a tangible historical and architectural context.
Castello Donnafugata has a historic garden with avenues, paths and hidden follies among centuries-old trees. The MuDeCo in the Donnafugata cultural complex presents the history of clothing. The two themes offer different points of interest: the garden focuses on its design, while MuDeCo focuses on the history of clothing.
Petrantica also has a clearly dated history: the ancient fondaco was built in 1642 and served that same year as a rest stop for horses and couriers. Couriers carried mail from Syracuse to the Hyblaean Mountains; those travelling along the ancient Via Elorina also stopped there. The Via Elorina connected Syracuse with Camarina and is mentioned by Greek authors.
Getting your bearings from Petrantica
For reference, Marina di Ragusa is about 2 kilometres west of Petrantica, and Donnalucata is about 6 kilometres east. Marina di Ragusa offers walks along its seafront promenade. Donnalucata combines walks along the seafront promenade with a fishing harbour. Both towns share the promenade as a point of interest; Donnalucata also has a harbour.
The excavations at Caucana lie about 10 kilometres west of Petrantica. Scicli is about 10 kilometres to the northeast and is known for its Baroque architecture. The distances given are approximate, measured from Petrantica. This makes it possible to group the destinations by their different highlights: seafront promenade, fishing harbour, archaeology or Baroque architecture.
